Normal ageing affects the ends first, like Craig said, but if those hose has started perishing all over then it is probably an older/incompatible hose that can't handle the E10+ fuel that is now used throughout the UK. If it's made of the wrong rubber, the ethanol in the fuel will cause it to swell, go brittle and form lots of little cracks along it's whole length, which is often hidden by the cotton overbraid on the older fuel lines. Make sure you replace the hose with an ethanol resistant one when you go shopping. There are lots of cheap knock-offs when it comes to ethanol proof fuel lines which don't last, so definitely go with a known brand that specifies that they are ethanol rated - e.g. Cohline, Gates etc. If you are happy to fit a modern (fuel injection) hose, and aren't too fussed about losing the "period" cotton overbraid then i can recommend the 7.5mm Cohline 2240 fuel hose, as it pretty much impervious to all fuels. It's not cheap though, at about £12 per metre, but you can probably do the whole car with just 1-2 metres. I got mine from Merlin Motorsports, but you can probably find the hose cheaper if you search. You'll probably also need to use proper jubillee/hose clamps on the hose too, as it internally reinforced so needs a bit more "squeezing" than the old rubber hoses. It is totally overspecced for a carb driven Cortina, but means you can fit and forget.
