Nice Article from Autocar 77 (I think) Always liked this one and the colour combinations. Also have the car framed on the garage wall. There was a discussion a while back about where the photo was taken but the conclusion was it is a painting. If it is, it's very good.

Not posted for a while but the latest from me is I picked up a bit of a bargain at the weekend. 25 quid for this centre section and it was quite local to me which is a first. Usually have to travel hundreds of miles or have it sent via a courier. I believe this is the same as the one that Motomobil supply ? It came from Poland apparently. Looks alright to me but the only downside is how the pipes are spliced together like that. I think the original system is like that but the one I have on at the moment has a nice Y section connecting the pipes together. This one even has 3 clamps and a pigs nose rubber. Bonus.

Cycling down the Commercial Road in London this afternoon and passed this lovely silver Cortina. What a great example 👍

Nowadays cars are just white goods people are more interested in the gadgetry or how envious the neighbours will be rather than wether it's actually any good.

Not much but something is always better than nothing. I gathered all the pieces I had prepared for the rear license plate lamp; Polished stainless cover, cleaned lens, no idea what part? was cardboard but that seemed silly so I made another from thin black plastic, gasket, 3D printed housing, bulb, wire harness with socket and connectors (taped with proper loom tape and electrical tape at the ends) and a label (though probably did not come with one originally). Rubber plug for the bulb was omitted as the new socket will seal just fine. Assembled; Picture from the parts book; Note that in the book connector ends are both shown as being the bullet type but this is not correct. Rubber bung is wrong way around on mine (oopsie, but trivial to fix) and I need to dig from the "archives" a correct rubber grommet for the boot floor pass through. Other than that ready to go.

Sorry for the obvious question but it hasn't been left with E10 fuel sitting in it has it . Try a small amount of fresh E5 down the carb. Failing that, slight corrosion on points, check supply to coil, cranking and not cranking. Worth checking the four terminals inside the dizzy cap for corrosion.

Crack the throttle & check to see if fuel is actually going down the carb throat. I've always just bought whatever seems a good deal when it comes to batteries.
  10. 1 point
No that shouldn't . Start from one point electrics or fuel. Good/charged battery Check timing, points gap, points power, spark at plug. Fuel in tank, getting to pump, filling carb , coming out of carb
  11. 1 point
Double check timing, fuel pump is working , and that battery doesn't sound like it's got much in, really makes a difference

Capri sump bowl is slightly longer & hits a cortina cross member, sierra clears ok as does Granada.
  16. 1 point
Ah yes. Sumps are different. Some people think otherwise 😉 but I fitted a 2 litre from a Capri into a Cortina and the sump fouled the cross member. I had to swap the sump from the Cortina with the pick up pipe as the shape of the two were completely different. I can imagine the Transit sump is has a deeper bowl as I seem to remember there's nothing directly below it unlike the Cortina.

Cheers for that mate, I jacked up the car to check, I've replaced the gearbox mount , and I noticed the sump was touching the cradle, I've now fitted 50 mm mounts,( rubber )maybe the pinto engine is out of a transit or which ever use the deeper sump, it's now clear , haven't tryed it yet as I'm awaiting new water hoses to come , will update when I know 👍

Small one should be blue( without this one it will not charge or have an ignition light).

Read this tread from the start today, Great story and so lucky to have the car for so long a great history. Love the car.

Unless something has been done to your wiring you should find that the two large wires are both +ve 12v and can be fitted to either of the large terminals. The small one triggers the dashboard warning light

I got fed up with replacing/repairing ACR alternators on my Mk4. I went for an A127 like this: LINK. If you go that route make sure you get the version that used the Vee belt and takes the Lucas plug not the screw terminals - unless you fancy doing some rewiring work
  22. 1 point
You did well there. I tend to find aftermarket exhausts last about 5 years before they start rotting away at the joints then fall apart. The one on my daily modern-ish car fell apart after 6 years which isn't bad going really. Replaced it now with a Stainless non cat straight through pipe with twin tail pipes.

The red thick cable is from the battery evidently, and there is the black spade cable, The round terminal is the ballast cable. A 075 battery is adequate

Some years ago (probably 30 years now) I replaced some Pinto engine mounts with some aftermarket ones. Moprod perhaps or similar and I had horrendous vibration. The engine was rock solid in the frame but the vibration was awful. Went to Ford and ordered a genuine pair of rubber mounts, sorted it out right away. I did have more movement from the engine though. Only a thought for you and my experience with mine. I'm not sure what you've used for your engine mounts but If you've used poly that could be the issue.

Bit more progress today, Fitted exhaust downpipe and centre box Unfortunately the centre didn't come with correct flange, so I've had to order a sleeve for next time Getting very close to the road now, just needs exhaust fix, rear wheel cylinders, a drop of coolant and then its good to go

Both use the same rubber mount. All the rwd's except escort & transit use same rubber mount.

Well I haven't touched my Cortina for a long time, too long to be honest. I have started looking at the front end to see what I need. The front end that I got many years ago has been 'restored' at some time, but needs doing again, nothing seems to fit correctly & both sides are different. If anyone has any pics of a stripped, unmolested front end I can use for reference that would be great, Cheers.

I see, still 9 months is a pee take, axle tubes can be straightened or replaced, halfshafts can be replaced "IF" needed?, either way a "classics specialist" should know people who can sort this within 9 months, parts are harder to come by nowdays yes i get that, when i had a workshop and "did" cortinas i had a network of banger racers who TBH were the only people who had old cars laying about but still, there's axles on ebay? a lot of garages specialise, specialise in waffle to get the car in had some experiance of that recently myself, a classic car specialist in wales who had to give up cos they couldn't figure out my wifes Mk1 mondeos rear brakes so i feel your pain, especialy if you cant do the work yourself

Ah - A tool for removing Boy Scouts from horse’s hooves, or possibly for fitting those infernal rubber bushes on the front anti-roll bar.

So having had the Cortina with it's oil burning problem, I decided to take the rebuilt engine back out, looks like the piston ring set I bought on eBay was a jaffer, the oil scraper rings weren't doing anything. So I bought a 2.0 pinto, new Mahle rings, shells n bearings, re honed the bores n rebuilt, skimmed flywheel, new cam, clutch n gasket set finally back in today , will fit manifolds tomorrow n see how it runs👍

I think the next thing on the car was the exhaust which I changed in 2016. Not much happened after I had the new front end fitted. I moved house and we lost my Mother in law and my Grandad in 2014 so once again the Cortina was left in the garage. I did go to a few local shows later in 2014 but I don't think I returned to Cortina day until 2016. Here's the old Exhaust system, Terrible Power Flow effort. Never liked it from day one. New rubber needed I think The guy did bend it nicely over the axle But, it was a horrible thing and was starting to go bad ways especially on the downpipe to centre section. I'd had it welded a few times to try and stop it blowing but I just had enough of it. I managed to get a part system after a wanted add on here from Martyn (Martog) He had the down pipes and centre section which he kindly sent via a courier. The back box I got from Oldpartstore and I was lucky to get that. One thing I noticed when fitting the standard steel system, the car had better performance. That "stainless" system must have been restricting it somewhat. I always thought the day I had that fitted the car didn't seem to go as well as it did. I had a party the day that system came off To me this looked a thousand times better.. Monmouth 2019 This shot was taken in the exact same spot as the second early photo I have from 1998. Same street 19 years later I have a feeling the centre boxes are on the way out. I've noticed it's started to sound a bit louder than it did. Not a horrible sound just a bit more noisy than it should be. Externally it looks ok but I think the centre boxes are on the way out. I've thought about getting new ones welded in ? What do you reckon ?

£18k to begin with, sold a £1k lower than the original asking price, (I think). A heavy price, but maybe a bargain, one day. When the world wakes up and realises the best days and the cars from then, are part of the "past" (behind us). Sadly likely never to be ever bettered .... Hence, that word, CLASSIC.
