Cheers @J2S the Epoxy Primer looks to be the go to choice. I notice Eastwood do a spray can which is clever, although expensive. I don't have any spray equipment so I might brush paint the panels as none of them are outer body panels.
-
Now then, I have a number of panels from expressed panels bought over the past years which one day will make there way onto my 1600e. Question is what is the best thing to paint them with while they sit in my garage (which could be for months or years still to come still). The garage is dry although some small areas flash rust have appeared on the odd panel (which sands off easily) I really should get them painted. Will any primer do? Is weld through primer actually the paint of choice? and if so are the really weld through? if so any recommendations of which one to buy, What do you guys recommend. Thanks for any advice.

I hadn't spotted this thread before but its a good read from start to finish. Great work and great inspiration for me as Im building up the parts (and courage) to get on with my own resto. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Great photo's Im looking forward to following this resto.

Great work on a good looking car. Keep the photo's coming as its great to see what is achievable. Makes me think I should get my finger out and get on with my project.

Jayne, There are a number of folk serving time at her majesty’s pleasure as a result of BT painting it on almost everything, (computers, vehicles, underground cable) including stuff usually bolted down so by that measure it works. I work for BT and we were all given a little pot for home use so its on on all my valuables. Of course its only any good if you are unfortunate enought to have the car stolen and its then recovered by the police.

Can anyone recommend a good imperial Tap and Die set for general use on my Mark 2. No particular jobs in mind but something to spend some birthday money in case I ever get round to restoring it. Captive nuts in the front chassis rails spring to mind.

Thanks for the info. The company advise they would have been gold back in the day but I doubted that already. Thanks again.

Hi all, I going to have my brake callipers refurbished and thinking of electroplating them. The company offers two colours, gold or silver so can anyone confirm what colour the callipers would have been out of the factory back in 1967? The company recon gold but I would think they were silver ? Thanks for any help.

Im looking forward to watching your resto as Im about to start my own series 1 1600e which by the looks of it needs as much work as your shell does. I have a rusty inner roof too which surprised me so its not just me then. Im amazed and inspired by the amount of work you guys on here do. Are you a professional in the trade or is it a hobby. Keep the pictures coming.

Having just extracted my 1600e from being under a tarpaulin for nearly 20 years I have to agree with bortaf that it doesn’t stop much rot. In fact it wasn’t kind at all to the boot lid. [/font] It seemed such a good idea at the time !

Thanks guys for the comments so far. I think I will try the wire wool method and if I can make a decent job of the metal and Im sure the leather will be OK. 24hrs ?? that could keeps me out of the wifes way and me out of trouble for a whole month then. Result all ways round.

It’s my first post on here so it’s very possible Im in the wrong section but Im sure someone will tell me if I am. Anyway, I have retrieved my steering wheel from storage and the metal is heavily tarnished and leather needs some attention too. Its nearly 20 years since it last saw the light of day (as with the rest of the car) and I guess some damp has caused the problem. If anyone has had similar problems what’s the best / safest way to referb the metal to its former glory. Any top tips for the leather would be appreciated too although I assume there is plenty of leather referb advice out there. As with other wheels I have seen for sale the leather is pulling apart at the seam. Or are there any profession restorers out there.
