I thought I recognised the location 👍

Where's this photographed Craig ? I'll take a really wild guess at Olivers mount but I have to say, great photos 👍

There's also someone who does a conversion on the p21 radio to mp3/Bluetooth etc. Not cheap, something like 250 quid.

ybb371h the get carter cortina
mk4savage replied to keithscortina's topic in Ford Cortina Discussion
I've been watching Get Carter recently and never noticed there were two Cortinas used until I did a good old google search for Get Carter Cortina and bsc popped up in the results. I also hadn't noticed the lack of front bumper on the one where he's travelling to Kinnears mansion. Silly me.. -
A friend of mine told me some years back to bend it in the vice so I clamped it up and went ahead and put some pressure on it with a large ring spanner and the thing snapped clean off at the base, just above the rubber gaiter. I told him shortly after and he said "Sorry, I told you to bend it in the wrong place, It's above the rubber bush part that you bend it. I'm guessing the bit I tried to bend is hardened so doesn't take kindly to being bent but the only problem is if you bend the top section you end up with a weird shaped gear lever as the hardened section at the bottom has a bend in it. Pain in the butt those gear levers. I tried an aftermarket quick shift kit where you dismantle the original gear lever and rebuild it with the quick shift parts in the kit but it was a terrible thing and rattled it's head off. That went in the scrap bin too. You're probably right Craig about the Capri one being straighter. I think I must have had Sierra ones and the angle on those is terrible.

MK4 Cortina, Ford C3 Automatic oil change
mk4savage replied to mk4savage's topic in Engine & Transmission
I bought the Syringe as suggested here by John. Bigger than I expected and heavy duty. Holds 550ml and I managed to extract 4 of those (and a bit) from the gearbox so I roughly had 2.5/3 litres out of the gearbox. A bit disappointing but I'd only get around the same out of it If I removed the pan off the bottom. I've replaced what I've extracted with fresh fluid and I'll run it for a few hundred miles and hope for the best Then maybe drain again and fit a new filter. Watch this space as they say. -
What you will find swapping to a type 9 five speed is the crankshaft on the 2.3 engine won't accept a spigot/pilot bearing big enough for the five speed input shaft as it has a smaller bore so it won't be a straight forward swap. I had this problem when I tried on my Mk4 and I know someone with a MK5 who encountered the same issue and had to have a Phosphor Bronze bush machined specially to do the conversion. I have an engine from a manual 2.3 Cortina in the garage and the bearing in the end of the crank is smaller than that of a 2.8 five speed. The input shaft on a Cortina V6 4 speed box is smaller than a type 9 five speed.

MK4 Cortina, Ford C3 Automatic oil change
mk4savage replied to mk4savage's topic in Engine & Transmission
Ok Craig, thanks again. I did a bit of googling and some suggest it's ok to mix the two. One other interesting comment was you can use the mineral type oil for earlier boxes in the later red dipstick gearbox designed for dexron ATF but not the other way around. That's how I interpreted it anyway. -

Thanks again Craig. One more question. If the current atf in the gearbox (comma brand) at the moment is a mineral based oil and I drain out as much as I can then re fill with dexron type fluid which I believe is a semi synthetic based oil would I end up with problems do you think ? I don't know if I'm reading too much into this but I want to make sure before I potentially mix incompatible oils. Cheers -
MK4 Cortina, Ford C3 Automatic oil change
mk4savage replied to mk4savage's topic in Engine & Transmission
Cheers Craig. I was a bit confused as the early dipstick is black and the later one is red. Not sure my local motor factors will have a clue. All the decent ones have packed up. Imagine walking in to Eurocarparts and asking them for gearbox fluid for a Cortina Do you think this would be suitable ? Morris ATF -
MK4 Cortina, Ford C3 Automatic oil change
mk4savage replied to mk4savage's topic in Engine & Transmission
Following on. Can anybody recommend the correct fluid for this gearbox please ? The dipstick top is red coloured as opposed to black but all the ATF fluid I keep coming across seems to be for Borg Warner boxes. This is the info out of the Granada Haynes manual All the oil I looked at seems to match that earlier spec. Cheers all -

Ball joint retaining plate
mk4savage replied to inthis2getha's topic in Suspension, Steering, & Brakes
I refitted mine after carefully removing the rivets from the original ball joint when I replaced the lower ball joints a couple of years ago. As Craig said they are originally to retain the rubber boot over the ball joint but the replacement ones are held on with a spring clip so not needed on non genuine replacement parts. They do nothing but act as a washer for the new bolts but I like to save original parts if I can. Link to my ball joint thread Lower ball joint replacement -
Ah. That's where I'm getting confused. The one I remember was Indeed Australian.

Nice. Is the "big six" a straight 6 motor ? I remember seeing one in a MK4 in a Heritage Ford magazine.
-
I know what you mean. The rocker covers look ok to be honest. They don't look out of shape near the bolt holes. No spreader plates on mine but I think later engines have them. I seem to remember them on my MK2 Granada which was an 85, B reg.
-
No oil cooler Craig. I nipped the rocker covers up yesterday. They're the second set I've had on it. Could be warped I suppose, really not sure. Can't comment on the sump as it was fitted by an engine builder about 25years ago. Could be though. I wouldn't put anything past them.
-
I just re watched the video on my pc. It actually sounds like that in reality. Very hard to tell on a phone which it was recorded on. It's certainly sweating something. I really must take a look at it. Could be the crank seal, Sump, Head gaskets. Anything. It leaks a bit from the rocker covers. New gaskets in recent years too. I also changed the rear crank seal about 10 years ago but that seemed to carry on leaking as before. Cheap seal no doubt..

Thanks John

Thank you for that Pete. I will get that done. I put a new filter in there back in 2006 and new fluid. I wouldn't say I'd done that many miles, probably about 7,000 in that time but at least it isn't the original filter and fluid. Edit: On 1/7/06 mileage was 56,958 and as of today is showing 62,977. Total of 6,019 miles in almost 19 years. The fluid probably isn't the quality that Ford would have used as it was bought from a Motor Factors. I remember the original gearbox from the car had started to do this "Snatching" a year or so after I'd bought it and started covering some miles in it. I did quite some mileage in it when I first got it in 1998. Oh how I wish I'd still got the original gearbox for it I do have another auto box for it from an early 2.3 MK5. It was working with no faults. Only reason it was removed from the car was the owner converted it to manual with a type 9. Also got one of those in the shed...best place for it.

Apologies for the mess and obstructions on the back seat. I always keep a cover on the rear seat and usually have the dog carrier on the seat for our little terrier. Must keep the cloth as safe as possible I always drive with covers on the front seats too.

Trying to upload a couple of photos but not having much luck from a mobile device. Car went ok but I'm finding the auto gearbox is snatching when changing down from 2nd to 1st. I spoke a while back about changing the oil in it but I haven't done so yet. Anybody had a similar experience and found new oil solved it ? Gearbox history is unknown as I got it from a scrap yard in around 2005. It's a later box from around 85 from a Granada.

Been to a local show today, probably about 20 miles each way (Weston Park, Shropshire). Went well which was good as I've not touched it since June last year.
-
Cheers Difficult to get the proper sound of it on video but it does sound nice for a 2.8 V6. Slightly tappety but nothing to worry about I don't think. What worries me more is It does leak some oil which is something I need to look at but where to start ?
