Bore wear & which valve spring compressors
Sarkie83 replied to Sarkie83's topic in Engine & Transmission
I went for the g clamp style in the end and it was easy enough to use. The lip you can see did clean up a bit, you can feel a mild step with your nail. -
I thought I would share this, as some of the long time members on here might remember my crystal green mk5 ghia from back in the day which I owned for about 5 years. I keep an eye out on eBay every now and then for some of my old cars incase they ever crop up. Must be about 2010 the last time I saw mine come up for sale (pic from the eBay ad): ..and haven't seen/heard anything of it since - it had been SORN for ages. Did some browsing, and came across this picture...that looks very familar, and like the beginning of it's reg: Yep, no doubt, it's it! The site the pictures are off seem to show that they were taken at the Gaydon(Or British as I think it's now called) Motor Museum. Sent off an email to them last night, and got a confirmation back form the curator saying: Dear Kieran, We do have YDF 802Y on display in the Museum. The Cortina is now part of the Ford Heritage Collection, who have kindly loaned it to us. I'd suggest dropping us a quick line nearer the date, to make sure it will be here on there day you intend to visit, as cars do come and go from the Museum from time to time. Yours sincerely, So turns out that it's now owned by the Ford Heritage Collection. Pretty nice to find out that it's being looked after, and should do for many years to come! It looks like it's lost the ghia lower body stripes since I sold it - so guessing it might have been resprayed. Hoping to go see it in the flesh sometime soon :D Pictures just before I sold it back in 2009:

Currently taking apart a pinto that is in my lockup. Taking the head off, I wasn't really sure what to look for in terms of bore wear/what is normal, what is an issue, etc... Attached are a couple of pictures I took: Also, now i've got the head off, what type of valve spring compressor do I need? I've seen the ones that look like they hook over the cam: Or, others that are more like a big G clamp:

Auto...but happens a long time after its off the choke (30 odd mins of driving rather than 10ish..) -

Yup - always has been, pretty much since I've had it -
My Capri has finally gone in for some welding work - yay! However...it turned up on the back of a recovery truck...not so yay. When it's warm/well off choke (prob 30 odd mins of A-road driving), it started spluttering/no power. After coming to a stop/giving it 10 mins, and restarting it ran ok again...for a few mins, then exactly the same thing. As I had to potentially go up the M1 I decided getting it there on the back of a trailer was probably safer. I had spluttered a couple of times in the same kind of situation the week before, but not the same extent. Once I'd waited the 30 odd mins for the recovery to turn up, it was fine starting up/driving on it. I'm a bit thrown as before it did this it was running fine/driving nicely - was thinking maybe fuel blockage (1.6 pinto btw)?

Came across a Transit on eBay with...a Toyota diesel fitted. Honestly I am not trying to hunt these out, I just keep stumbling across them :winner: Transit mk1

Yeah - I've seen the odd one crop up with a p100 diesel in them/that was what made me curious about this one.. As if that route is already pretty well tested/bolt in, then why go to the bother of fitting a Toyota unit - unless it fits better than we realise or was free (??). Haha even tried and tested routes often seem pretty daunting - think my Capri is destined to stay pinto and my collection of 2.9 bits will hang about in the shed, haha! Agreed - I'm sure it would be! but no doubt it's gonna be a pain, and be one thing after another once mounting is done, gearbox, prop, electrics, ugh :-(. Someone make a nice simple kit for people like me please :-)

I came across this the other day on eBay and was wondering if anyone else knew anything else about it? I did send the seller and emails asking a bit more about the conversion, but he probably thought I was weird/didn't know as I didn't get a reply! It sounds like he wasn't the one who did the conversion. Was it anyone on here/know what was involved in fitting it? Even what Toyota engine it is (from the look of it)? Mk5 Cortina diesel I'll copy the details out (for when the link eventually expires) 1982 mk5 cortina 1.6L fitted with a 1600 turbo diesel engine and 5 speed box . built in october 1981 , this base model car was registered new in feb 1982 . the grey / beige colour scheme and the chocolate brown heavy woven cloth interior is unusual and is in very good condition . the car has a rust free body shell , mint condition rear arches , cills and floorpan and chassis legs had the original paint from the factory . i steam cleaned the car underneath for mot and removed 32 years of grime to reveal the original steel in places where the power hose blew the paint off . the metalwork was like new . to preserve the car for many more years she was waxoyl rustproofed from front to back , including the underside of the wings and quarter panels . the inside of the doors , boot area and engine bay had been done from new with a waloyl type rust proofing spray and has kept these areas in perfect condition . like most 1.6 pinto engines , the spray bar providing oil to the camshaft got clogged if not cleaned at each oil change which led to an early demise of the engines so it is likely that is why the diesel engine was fitted by the previous owner . i have serviced the diesel engine changing oil and all filters , fitted a new thermostat and had the radiator and heater matrix re-cored . heater and electric fan are working perfectly . a glow plug light is fitted like on any diesel car . turn the key and wait for the glow light to go out and she fires first time every time . the diesel engine is toyota and is very quiet and runs smoke free . she is very nippy being a turbo diesel . the only faults i can find are a slight whine from either the diff or driveshaft carrier bearing but it hasn't gotten any worse in the last 6 months , and a very slight dinge in driverside front wing which is hard to spot . overall a very nice car . no work needed unless you want to investigate the slight whine noise . car is mot'd to may 2016 so stick some tax on her and drive away . very cheap car to run . new tyres all round . period stereo asset player fitted and works . the car is located in county armagh n. ireland

Got them fitted to the Capri (again like a lot of the above) it was more cause of the low dust thing. Not really sure if they are better/worse than anything but else. It's seems to stop ok! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I can see why so many old cars get this kinda treatment...and I don't it's about trying to bodge it on purpose. I think it's more about not having the skills/knowing anyone with them/or finding a body shop, garage, etc that will want to deal with rust. As a result, things just get left/patched. I did a general bodywork course years back - never touched any of my cars with a welder though - too scared too...and there is a bit of a knowledge gap between welding two practice bits of metal together and cutting an arch out/being able to repair what u find!
