  1. it's not easy to source a 2 litre anymore, and expensive, so I wondered if it was a possibility to use a 165 block. The block is the same as the 2 litre only with narrower bores. It's the same height, for instance, whch i know as it arrived with a 2.0 cam belt cover and got me all excited until i found the 165 cast into the block, which confirmed it wasnt a 2 litre, sadly. On the existing engine, Ive uprated the carb and im also toying with uprating the exhaust , which might be enough improvement for what I want. There's not much point in using the 165 engine without uprating it in some way, it's probably not worth the expense to do it. I bought the Sierra engine for the unleaded head and recovered most of the cost selling the carb and mainfolds, so ive more or less got a free head, held in reserve if ever i need it.
  2. but it's not a silly question?
  3. as you probably know the 165 is the same external dimensions (ie height) as a 2 litre block, but with narrower bores. Has anyone any thoughts on boring it out to 1.8 or even 2 litre? would this be possible? I have one sitting spare , and the head (unleaded of course).
  4. the long arm servo was fitted to rhd export Mk2s also. however sourcing one will be very difficult and you'd need to alter the inner wing. I don't think the servo will improve the braking, I'd consider bigger Capri vented discs and bigger calipers or something alon g those lines. I would try someone like Burton Power to see if they do a conversion kit.

    sounds like a genuine bargain.
  6. got the car back now, seems to have lost the clunk but its a filthy night here so i didnt go very far.
  7. many many years ago, 15 or more. Someone got me the bushes no doubt and the tool... too old to do it now, made a mistake not allowing for a lift when my new garage was built (twenty years ago....) There was no doubt at al which bushes it was on the Taunus, completely shot and waggling about. Yes the tool was as you describe...must have lent it or given it to someone.
  8. i fitted them myself to my Taunus, a long time ago, didnt seem too diffcult but i couldnt do it now... too feeble. I had two fitting tools but ive no idea where they are now.
  9. just to round it off...the new pipe from Motomobil fitted striaght on and is a much better job than the one that was on it, presumably a 1.6 pipe.... heavier gauge metal too.
  10. ive ordered rthe ones suggseted from Scotts, the dimensions dont quite tally but only the odd .mm or two so i gues they'll be OK. Well over €50 ... if i could have identified what i wanted and got them from the motor factors it would be probably half that. My new garage is very old school and the boss told me he has done hundreds of these, quite nostalgic for him having a Cortina on the ramp. Anyway, he checked the shocks and they're OK afaik and the other bushes look ok to him. Only once before have i replaced bushes on all the cars Ive had, and that one the axle was all over the place....this one is just a knock so im still a bit concerned its something else....
  11. That's Motomobils diagram and No 5 shown is 15059280-5 as shown in my previous post, which you're saying is the body end, which is no4 .(semi trailing arm front) . They both look the same size to me...39.2 ....so you can see how im struggling to get a defintive answer. length does vary but diameter the same.
  12. ive had the car seven years and not had to change the bushes so I'd take a chance in that, however i'm still getting nowhere in identifing the ones I needs for the ears on top of the Axle. If i could identify the solid ones, from an EU source, I'd go for them, (but not from the UK as it almost doubles the cost).
  13. im getting such alot of conflicting info. These seem to be the ones from Motomobil but they're bigger than the size you say https://www.motomobil.com/en/products/rear-axle-semi-trailing-arm-bushing-rear-15059280-5
  14. just double checking...it's the bush on top of the diff that appear suspect... usual suspects I guess.... this would be the semi trailing arm bush rear, right?
  15. i had a quick look, i cant see anything obviously amiss, but then maybe i wouldnt with the weight on them? Something is clonking...i'll just leave the garage find it.
