Replacement Lucas lrs109 starter motor for 1.6 MK5
adamlab4 replied to adamlab4's topic in Engine & Transmission
Mine has an accuspark ignition and when installing with the original Lucas starter motor, I couldn't work out how to bypass the ballast resistor so I just left it all as was and it runs fine apart from in this weather, it needs a bit of Easy Start first thing in the morning... -

Lol that sounds like my day at work as a control system designer and programmer! It's never quite as it says in the manual! - a bit of peaceful time, trial and error and usually - success haha? -
Replacement Lucas lrs109 starter motor for 1.6 MK5
adamlab4 replied to adamlab4's topic in Engine & Transmission
Hmmm, me neither. I asked and got told by Accuspark to remove the ballast but they were very vague on the details. I connected it up as I thought should be (12 months ago) and it has always started fine since, apart from very damp cold mornings, when it needs some Easy Start spray. Maybe if I understood how to wire it correctly, I wouldn't need the Easy Start in the winter? Once it's running, it's fine all day. -

Replacement Lucas lrs109 starter motor for 1.6 MK5
adamlab4 replied to adamlab4's topic in Engine & Transmission
Hi, I believe the old one was 12v 0.8kW and the replacement one that I have found listed as a replacement for the LRS109 is 12V 1.4 Kw High Torque - is it ok to use a higher torque version? Thanks again for the help. -

Hi Tigdlo, Thanks for the reply - I'm not a mechanic and don't have loads of experience so I hadn't realised this was the case. I have already fitted an Accuspark electronic ignition so am I right in presuming I only need to reconnect the battery and the ground? If this is the case, I have found a replacement for the Lucas lrs109 on ebay.: -

Hi, My 1982 Mk5 was starting fine , then suddenly just a CLICK from the starter solenoid I'm presuming. The battery was new a year ago and I have charged it over night (12.7v from it prior to the over night charge) but still, the engine won't turnover, just a Click. The starter looks like it's the original. I've taken it off and it's not jammed or seized. The engine can also be turned over with a spanner so not seized either. The car has been used at least weekly and just had a big service and MOT pass a few months ago. I'm guessing I need a new starter motor but can't find a replacement for a Lucas lrs109 anywhere. All those advertised as suitable on ebay turn out not to be when I send photos. I even got sent one guaranteed to be correct but it had two points of connection on the solenoid, rather than the 3 wires that connect to mine - main battery, ground and then another black and yellow wire which is bound together with the ground. Any help would be much appreciated! Adam.

Water in footwell - best place to start based on picture.
adamlab4 replied to adamlab4's topic in Bodywork & Paint
Haha - I did exactly the same with an old Audio A4 - I couldn't understand why I could hear water moving across the inside of the car when cornering - I drilled a whole in the floor and was in disbelief at how much water came out! - and for how long! I've tracked down the problem in the Cortina and luckily quite easy to deal with - door seal when parked at a certain angle and the wind is in a certain direction! -
Hi Tim, The oil on the spark plug was just what had blown out when the cap came off. After I bought the car, it had a full health check and service at a local garage called Project Shop in Bicester who specialise in looking after vintage cars. Since then though - as you say, it has become a regular daily driver, so a few things are probably due a good check. I can honestly say - I don't think vehicles have improved much since 1980! The only thing I miss on occasion is power steering wheel someone has blocked me in a bit tightly when parked! Adam.

Hi Tim, Thanks for the added advice. I will check this too. Unfortunately due to work commitments, I had less time than hoped for this weekend BUT one thing I did notice when cleaning up some of the oil that came out (a small amount, but obviously it spread!) was that some oil had pooled around the top of one of the spark plugs and I could see bubbles while the engine was running. I took all the spark plugs out and they were all dry (no oil got in) Prior to this check of all the spark plugs, I tightened the plug that had bubbles around it a little until the bubbles stopped - this was a tiny amount and not excessive - could this have caused the problem? As I said - it has only happened twice in the 6 months that I've owned the car, maybe a few hundred miles apart and I'm pretty sure it was during a motorway stint when the car suggested (?) it was going at 70 mph (probably closer to 63) Adam.

Yes it's last oil change was with MOTUL Classic 20W/50 Mineral Oil.

Bicester is a real 'Motor city' with Bicester Heritage etc. I bought the car to have a vehicle that I have some chance of fixing myself, without need of a laptop! I'm happy to get my hands dirty before heading to a garage and have serviced older motorcycles, but for sure not a mechanic as such.
