  1. Hello Richard,

I have just been reading through your post ref the Mk6 transit servo mod you did to your Cortina. As the post is quite old I'm presuming you have the car on the road by now? Just wondered what you thoughts are of the brakes using this servo?

I have fitted discs all round and looking for a suitable servo/mc. I have a dual diaphragm one from a Volvo which could work but the overall diameter is 8.5" so it sits the reservoir up quite high and I'm not sure if it will clear the bonnet.

Anyway I'm interested to know how you find your brakes with the transit servo as I think you said this is also a twin diaphragm unit?

    Many thanks

    Stuart

      Hi Stuart,

Sorry for the delay responding, I missed your message coming in last week.
The car is now on the road with the Transit servo and Mondeo master cylinder and has been through a few MOTs with that setup.

I can definitely recommend the upgrade, as it keeps the overall size in the engine bay similar to the original setup, with good bulkhead clearance around the servo and good bonnet clearance with the master cylinder.

The brakes also have a nice feel to them as the servo / master cylinder combo really matches well with disc brake cylinders.  It brakes like a much more modern car, but still retains the brake feel and smoothly builds up the force as you push the pedal.  It also feels a lot more familiar getting into it from the daily driver, as when I first had the car the amount of brake travel it had and the weakness of the braking force was terrifying.

  2. I got the front suspension mounted and measured up today and yes your right, the wheel arches on the back are slightly wider than the fronts which is why the front wheels look like they stick out further
  3. I think I can remeber reading somewhere that the mk3 Cortina front wheels sit out slightly wider than the rears, can anyone back that up? Also if that's true does anyone know what that difference is?... Thanks Stu
  4. Sorry, I missed your reply somehow 🤨 Anyway, yes it is a new installation. I have the rack mounted to the cross member. It was pretty straightforward, just had to grind down the top ribs slightly and cut a small piece out of the engine mount for hose clearance. I am fitting it to my mk3. I have a pump already installed, it's from a Sierra/Granada and I've mounted it to the RV8 which is going in. So did pirtek supply you with the fittings aswell as the hoses? If so any part numbers or descriptions? Thanks for your help so far Stu
  5. Hi Nigel, I know this is an old thread but I'm doing the exact same thing as you. I have a Mk4 PS rack and need to get some pipes made up between the rack and pump. Do you have any info/pics you could show me of the pipes you had made by Pirtek please? Many thanks Stu
  6. So I'm looking around for wheel ideas and ideally want to fit 225 width tyres, if possible front and back. Just wondered what kind of offsets have worked for people? I think the standard is ET38 but I like the deeper dish looking wheels. As my car is just a shell at the moment, I have the opportunity to modify the inner tubs and if necessary can remove some of the arch lip to make them fit, although I don't want to flare the arches. Bit of a long shot, but I guess I'm asking if anyone knows what the minimum offset is for a 7.5 or 8" wide rim with a 225 tyre to fit within the arches...
  7. Thanks, do you know if the Sierra racks are the correct width for the Cortina? although I guess I could machine down the tie rod ends if they're too long
  8. This has probably been discussed many times before so apologies in advance. I want to fit power steering to my Mk3 cortina. I don't necessarily need something that will bolt in with minimal changes (although that would be nice). I did read somewhere that a Cortina mk4/5 power steering rack would work but I haven't been able to find one of those so far. So looking for available rack options the right length, happy to make mounts, hydraulic pipes etc. I've come across a sierra 4wd psr, does anyone know if that would have potential? I'm not sure what the difference is between the sierra 2wd and 4wd rack? I hoping to hook whatever rack I end up with to the standard Range rover pump on the 3.5 V8 that's going in. Would that be a problem or does both the pump and rack have to match, ie from the same car? Thanks in advance for any help/info. Stu
  9. ..how do you manage to post pics? I seem to be limited to .015mb?
  10. So did you replace the link arms with SD1 Watts link arms? And if so what are the benefits?
  11. This is a pic of the kit I have on a Capri axle, although I had to make the file so small to be able to upload it so the picture isn't very clear now
