Struggles to run after Radiator change
robbierobinson replied to robbierobinson's topic in Engine & Transmission
Managed to get car running, ran at high revs for a while then left at idle for about 15 mins, seems ok. think it might of been a bit of coolant over engine. Car seems to run fine now will get out weekend to check. Going to look at idle mixture screws too. Thanks for all your comments and advice. Robbie🤗👍 -

Hiya, Have just fitted a new Radiator, mk3 2.0. Flushed out old coolant. Replaced with new radiator and added coolant. Car now struggles to start, runs fine for a few minutes then suddenly stops, (lack of fuel maybe!???) car then very difficult to start again. Car was running ok, starting ok before radiator change. Have checked points, leads, battery terminals, Will check sparks next, but car was fine before radiator change???? Fitted Radiator is exactly the same as the old one any advice welcome regards P Robinson

Wanted Mk3 2 door Front seats/Tombstone. Thanks RR
-
Thanks that would be good give me an idea on how they look.
-
Thanks will look at capri recaro’s. The Recaro’s I tried years ago did just bolt straight in, but ride height was too high€not sure what they came out of!!
-
I’ve seen the posts ref the Alfa seats, understand there’s a bit of work needed to fit, but it’s an option. Ideally after some get tombstones but searched high and low, no luck, keep looking I suppose. Did try Ford recaros years ago, way to high, probably get them to fit with some work. thanks
-
They’re nice looking seats, presently have a pair of recaros from a rover (I think) nice seats but do not tilt forward. The seat bouster has gone drivers side, just trying to get ideas for other compatible front seats. Thanks fo the info

Problem solved I think! done a compression test all cylinders were close 120, 125, 120, 125. changed rocker cover gasket as that was leaking badly. new plugs new HT leads. Car ran for 5 minutes then stopped, hard to start and again ran for about 5 mins and stopped. checked points, rotor arm and dizzy cap all fine. Replaced condensor and bingo problem solved. Taken car fo a short run seems fine. Hopefully issue has been sorted glad it wasn’t An engine issue. thanks to all for advice. RT100🙂

Dont have access to a compression tester but will buy one. It’s been running really well just this one recent problem. Will look in to getting a compression tester before I attempt anything. Do show what looked like a brownish colour smoke when I was attempting to start before cleaning spark plug I just put this down to misfire. thanks for your reply. Regards Robbie

Hello, after any advice anyone can offer. My Mk3 2.0 GXL has been running well all over the summer since engine wiring loom meltdown and replacement. Had issues starting yesterday so thought I would check over points and plugs. Cleaned up all plugs but notice spark plug No3 was very oily compared to the other plugs. Cleaned it up checked gap etc and replaced. Tried to start and great problem solved the car started so to check out went for a run. About 5 miles later car comes to a stop no power and will not start not to far from home luckily. Checked plug No3 very oily again cleaned up and replaced. Car started and drove well. Have had my head in the manual and looks like it may be the worn bores/piston rings or valve guides. Any advice welcome is this a difficult job? I,m not an expert when it comes to engines!, Regards Robbie

Thanks for all comments problem now sorted with new loom installed. Back on the road!!!!!!!

About 3 months after a near total loss, new engine loom is in and car is back on the road. Just wanted to recommend a company called Auto Sparks based in Nottingham. Sent old badly melted engine loom to them and they replicated it for a fair price. Had to get a garage to to the final wiring up as they cannot replicate the old plug in design through to the dash so wires have to be individually Joined together. Regards Rr
