Problem solved! Wasn't the drums after all. Local tyre place which fitted the tyres to the new rims told me they couldm't get the wheels on because of the rectangular casting but turns out that was a complete red herring, the drums are completely standard (and thanks to Duffy for the pic on his members' cars topic of his rear hubs which confirmed it). Turns out it was just the thickness of the powder coating which was preventing the centre of the rim fitting over the hub, nothing some grease, a stanley knife and brute force couldn't get round. New wheels haven't fallen off yet...

I'm normally east Lincolnshire but will be in N Yorks for the next week or so...

Got a problem with the rear hubs on my Mk 5 2.0 GL - currently running 15" mondeo rims, now got refurbished original 13" sports wheels, tried fitting them yesterday, no probs on the front but wouldn't seat properly on the back. The drums have a sort of rectangular casting on them which gets in the way (but doesn't affect the 15" rims). Am guessing that the previous owner has fitted different drums - what should the originals look like? Anyone got any for sale? Cheers, Mike

Must admit that I wasn't too sure about the colour originally - it was the only thing about the car which put me off! It's growing on me now, just hope the wife likes it as she's in hospital and hasn't seen it yet (er actually, I haven't even told her I've bought it yet :) ) Hope there are no spontaneous combustion problems with the Mk4 est. the only grief it ever gave me was on the journey back from collecting it. Ran perfectly on the open road but kept stalling when I got stuck in traffic. Didn't make me very popular with everyone else on the Purley Way in the rush hour :clown:

Well b****r me - looks a bit sorry for itself now, it was in pretty good shape 4 or 5 years back. Seem to remember that the first owner was a Ford employee from Southampton - used to have the original invoice showing the staff discount, also some extra rust treatment I think...

My last corty was the white Mk 5 1.6L now owed by Simon Caprilaser - sold that to Trev SkaSkinhead last summer. A few years back when we lived in London we also had a nice Apollo Green Mk 4 1.6GL auto estate - pic attached - anyone here know what's happened to it since? All I can remember is that the bloke I sold it to worked for the post office...

Here she is - 1981 2.0 GL in Cordoba Beige, a few small bumps and scrapes but never been welded, 17k from new according to the clock and old MOTs. Previous owner has fitted PAS (supplied by Bortaf I think), 2.5" exhaust, unleaded head and bigger wheels off a mondeo.

I managed to get classic insurance on a Moggie Minor when I was a student in the early 90s - broker was Bain Hogg in Dudley, they've since been taken over by AON but still do classic insurance - try www.aon-classiccar.com

Hello folks, Just bought me a nice 81 2.0GL saloon, will post some pics in Members' Cars section soon (no digital camera here yet so got to do it the old fashioned way...). In the meantime, got a few wheel queries. Car's currently on 15 inch mondeo steel wheels with 195/65 tyres - sticks to the road well but am a bit of a purist so want to put it back on the original sports steels (which were in the boot, newly blasted and powdercoated!). Need to paint on the black highlights - should they be matt or gloss? The quick alternative would be to run a set of ghia alloys I've got (bought them for their nearly new 185/70 Continental tyres to transfer to the steels but the rims are better than I thought and should come up well with a repaint and lacquer) but that might offend the purists... Hi folks, I'm afraid I'm a bit of lurker - just emerging from the shadows for my penny's worth about the unregistered Cortina... It's in the T C Harrison showroom in Derby with a sticker price of £7995 - was passing through a couple of weeks ago and had a look around it. As you would expect, it's minty mint, engine bay would make you weep, although the paint job is a bit naff in places (e.g. large drip under the boot lock) but I guess that was Dagenham in the early 80s for you. Couldn't help making a cheeky offer but was told they'd already been offered 7k and refused it. Apparently it belongs to the Harrison family collection. Course none of the sales team there has ever dealt with anything older than a Mondeo - don't think any of them even know what a carburettor does! "Mike the Lurker"

Yep, I'm the mysterious seller of Trev's new car, been lurking here for a while. This one would have been raced at Kings Lynn if I hadn't bought it - I've had a couple of Mk 4s and a Mk 5 in the past, rot boxes the lot of them but this one is absolutely rock solid. Wanted to keep it but the missus had other ideas :D . Good thing she doesn't know how much I spent on it over the last couple of months - won't divulge any secrets :lol: but I reckon Trev's got a right good deal!
