  1. If you've got a 1200 or 1300 you may have to turn the A/c off to do a hill start.... The difficult bit would be trying to keep the inside looking stock. The standard heater box wouldn't be suitable for modification so you'd end up with a monstrosity slung under the front parcel shelf like the early Mustangs had, they looked accessory shop too. The under bonnet stuff would be fairly simple.
  2. Hi ya Bobby, I'm Ok, how are you? Those ankle snappers of yours must be all grown up now....
  3. Hardly a dangerous fail though, surely an advisory would be sufficient? A lot of the MOT is not about safety..
  4. Done about 60 miles in the last 9 years? Unless the speedo is broken?
  5. I was very lucky, the local machine shop I first used in 1977 (Dartford Rebore) and last used in 2016 when I stopped building engines is still going strong doing a great job at a great price.
  6. Sounds like the same process that made me leave my last job and take early retirement (A decision I do not regret). Good luck for the future, you're obviously a very skilled person so finding work shouldn't be a problem?
  7. I'm retired now Keith, I haven't built an engine for years... I am an expert on some forms of gardening, decorating and cooking, none of which would be any use to this fellow?
  8. On a Mk1 you'll most likely get away with it, you will have slightly further slave cylinder travel but you can adjust that out by having slightly more free movement on the pushrod. On the non adjustable MK2 there is a likely issue that may cause the clutch to over throw, if that happens you'll hear it (Noisy) when you disengage the clutch when putting the pedal down to the floor with the engine running.
  9. Just guessing but tall deck or taller engine block could be done to provide a low compression engine. 1600 Crossflows were used in Fork trucks, airport tugs and dock handling machinery where low compression/hi torque units were required? I bought a NOS crate crossflow which was kept as a spare for a fork truck (Running on propane) but I don't remember if it had different markings on the block or not... I only wanted the block for a tall block Lotus Twin Cam build so immediately machined 1/4" off the top of it anyway.
  10. Compression test will probably only be 20 psi down, but enough to cause breathing. Valve stem seals would cause exhaust smoke, buts that's all, cannot cause crankcase pressure (Breathing).
  11. Needs a full and proper rebuild, bores don't wear round so new rings would be waste of time. If that engine has done 94k then that's a lot for a crossflow.
  12. Hi Glen, I no longer have a Cortina so can't go and measure up the info you need, I'll tell you what I can remember... Mk1 & 2 diff flange diameter is 3-1/2". Later Cortinas, Escorts etc had a 4" flange. I can't remember the PCD, someone on here will have diff lurking in there spares heap to measure. Bolt size is 5/16" UNF so hole size will be 5/16" clearance.
  13. I'm guessing he has a split prop and is measuring between centre and other end U/J's? I also think he wants diff flange diameter and PCD of the bolt holes?
  14. The first item is from the genuine seller. The only good thing is that this hacking scammer is listed as residing in Italy, so I just put the "UK only filter" on and they all go away....
  15. I'm sure someone told me you just swap them over.
  16. Well done, can't be much more to do now?
  17. Had the same fault, I checked the wiring, every connection! It turned out to be the flasher unit, swopped that and all good.
  18. Oil leaks can be caused by a build up of Crank case pressure. Is the engine high mileage and are all the breathers clean and clear. Lip seals are designed to run wet but not leak, they usually are the first seals to leak when excessive pressure builds up in the engine.
  19. Nah, Kev's car is a light blue V6 Mk2 estate.
  20. Get your Mk1 out Dave, forget about these new cars...
  21. I think you have to have posted more than 4 posts before you can put photos up, can't remember how many...
  22. Lovely car, top restoration. I say it's a Super with GT parts, be interesting to see if it has radius arms on the back axle. VIN code for 4 door super is BA95 and for a 4 door GT/E it's BA97, assuming Dagenham built. Checking the VIN is not conclusive as very easy to swap. I agree with Batty's valuation as all Classics will take (and are) a drop in value due to Covid 19 recession.
  23. Lotus speedo and Tacho, nice touch...
