on a similar note, I met a bloke in a carpark (as you do) who told me that he had a Mk 3 and he was chatting about how he widened the wheelbase by putting washers on the bolts before putting the wheels on. I imagine it only gave him a few mm extra, but with these extra long bolts, could I stick more washers on and extend them further (basically for a bit more front end stability/ faster cornering and also a smoother ride over speed bumps?) Same here mate, I have told her that if I can't find a buyer, I may have it myself, although the last time I bought a car off her, she charged me family rate...instead of paying the £200 she paid for it, she made me pay her £300...and that was after me getting it taxed and MOT'ed! Apparently the actual cable went some time back and the AA fitted a closest match to it, that snapped, they did another closest match, that went as well (apparently a guy used superglue to fix it to get her home which worked, so it must have been the adjuster then) so it fell to me to try and sort it. I've sources (hopefully) one from Trupart, and my old man is getting back to me with news, he did say that she's in the mood to get shot of it but thats probably because she was frustrated about not getting the right part (fickle creature is Spanner's Sister....doesn't have the same ring as Scissor sisters does it!) So either it will all be sorted, or else this car may be up for sale (I'll make sure she doesn't scrap it, and that we get the clutch cable sorted!) Cheers for your help, Spanner out

My sister's corti's clutch cable has snatched so I'm trying to hunt down a replacement. I stupidly put a bid in for a Mk4/Mk5 1300 cable, then realised it's a 1600! So I need to find out if it's a Mk 4 or Mk 5 (can't get through to my sister to ask the horse) Can anyone identify if its a 4 or a 5? it's a 1980, but don't know which! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Spanner out

I've got some of these catalogues and was going to scan them for the useful bits but looks like they've beaten me to it! It's a great way of finding part numbers, and also of seeing what parts will fit other cars! Hope this helps spanner out

I've had a problem for a while now and thought it was just me being odd (which I am). I thought the lights on my dash were quite dim (like me) and one night I was driving along when all of a sudden the car decided to flash the car in front of me (Herbie does it in the bushes). I noticed that the dash suddenly went really bright, so the flash had actually been a big surge in the power, almost like I'd switched the stereo off and the power had flooded back into the system. However, I didn't notice any engine change, I hadn't switched any lights, accelled or decelled or gone round a corner or over a bump, it just happened (so I don't think it was a loose connection that suddenly made good contact). It lasts for a few minutes, then drops back to the normal dim. My concern is whether this is a surge, or whether I'm normally running at lower power and what I think is a surge is actually it returning to normal. Are Mk 3's known for being dim, or are the bright when they are normal? (this isn't an april fools comment!) Any comments are appreciated, Regards Spanner
