  1. Thanks both, especially Craig for keeping an eye out.

Plugs, leads, coil, points already changed.  Only thing someone pointed out to me yesterday is to consider the dizzy as well but I'd prefer to start with the carb.

I sent an article last year that I'd planed to be a series of 3 possibly 4 that I was told was great just what was needed but for some reason was never used so, I didn't write the next as there was no point until it had been featured.

The first 2 parts will now be used else where unfortunately they will probably have no use for the final part/s.

Now I'm no Conan Doyle but I'm passionate about cortinas & I think the project would've been interesting as It covered a little known/uncovered area re the MK3/4/5 versions.

Perhaps it can be posted here once the first half has been published in another clubs magazine.

Which I left along time ago as I didn't feel it was right to be an area rep ( plus a registrar & tech adviser) in the club & be a member in a similar one make club.

I've always thought that it would be beneficial if there was a sort of umbrella ford club (similar to the MG owners club) that could push classic fords in the media/parts  world as many fords built in the same decade share parts, thus remanufacturing these items would be easier/cheaper due to the combined numbers,  ie the Ind stalk & combined light/wiper stalk was used from 74 to 84ish in facelift MK3/4/5 Cortina,mk2 escort,MK3 Capri,mk2 Granada, plus MK1 fiesta with shorter levers & mk2 transit with longer levers.

As far as I know no one remakes these .

Similarly number plate lights MK4/5 Cortina,mk2 escort etc.

    Exterior door handle MK3 Cortina,MK1 Granada,mk2 escort,mk2/3 Capri.

Exterior door handle MK4/5,MK1 fiesta,mk2 Granada etc.

    To name a few.

Surely there's a market with the popularity of fords, there are 4 magazines for them on the book shelves fast ford, performance ford, classic ford, retro ford!

Will Holman editor of PPC mag told me some years ago that at practical classics mag that any editon that had a ford on the cover always showed a marked increase in sales.

I don't think anyone else has had the technical input to the club you provided over the years, all done voluntary, and I'm not surprised in the least that a good technical document didn't get included.  The chairman was also the magazine editor and he didn't have time to do either properly.

Sad, but the wrong pick at the wrong time.

  3. The club struggled in recent years on several fronts and has suffered ultimately from a lack of interest. I think it was a self-fulfilling downward spiral:

    • more people using free social media sites to organize meets and discuss cars
    • a number of area reps with zero input
    • little content provided for club magazines/newsletters
    • a decision to move away from the founding principles of all Cortinas to concentrate on the 4/5
    • replacing a long-standing member/chairman with a new chairman who ultimately didn't have time to run the club

Once you are providing less to the members, less members are interested, and less interested members mean the club continued to provide less, so on and so on.

I wasn't a member for as long as Craig but it was part of my car social scene in the NW for just shy of 20 years.  I personally handed my notice in as membership secretary on September 1st 2019 as I couldn't justify my involvement in processing membership fees from members when they were not getting what they subscribed to. It was a moral standpoint that also hammered another nail in the coffin lid as no-one else would volunteer for the role.

It was written into the club rules when founded that should the club fold all monies held in the bank had to be donated to like-minded registered clubs, hence the decision to donate to the 1, 2, and 3 registered clubs.  I should also point out that this decision was actioned purely by the chairman and treasurer, with no other members of the committee (of which there are several who use BSC) involved whatsoever.

  4. Hi all

A mate of mine is restoring my old mk4 2.3.  We're trying to find out what the paint code is but the VIN decoder on here doesn't have an exact match for the trim plate.  Colour code is U9, VIN decoder has U and options "-", "A", or "K", but no 9.  Anyone know what it could be?

    Thanks.

  5. Yep.

Still a stripped shell on an a-frame.  I've had big problems finding a painter in the last couple of years - everyone seems to want quick jobs not classic motors.  Did find someone excellent but he's so unreliable I was waiting over a year to go through it with him.  Currently got my Sierra with another another place to test what they're like.  No point in getting the S dipped until I know I have a good painter lined up.

  6. If only there had been some sort of Cortina related show this month a load of us could have turned up to.  I could have shown you some love by insulting you loudly all weekend!

    :bleh:

I've hardly touched a Cortina since my mk3 failed to proceed at Symonds Yat last year.  I've been restoring my Sierra and generally mucking about with my Corvette and motorbikes, hence not on here much.

  7. No help sorry, but I'm watching this with interest as I've had the same issue on a mk2 Transit with 2.0 pinto.  Over time I've changed the thermostat, water pump, sender, clocks, and tested the wiring, all with no difference.  I too added an aftermarket temp gauge which shows the actual temp is fine.

  8. Not long back I was talking to a Cortina owner who was putting their car back on the road after a long lay off.  He openly admitted that getting on the road wouldn't have been possible before MOT exemption because the car was rotten.  He was therefore knowingly putting a dangerous car on the road, quite probably endangering other road users and pedestrians.  That's my only beef with exemption - the idiots who take advantage.

  9. I wouldn't think so too.  I've fitted 3 and never had to worry about the tank.  Just be aware that the estate and saloon ones are different.  I was also told once that the mk3 is slightly different again from a 4 or 5 due to where the number plate is, but I'm not sure how true that is.

  10. I think leaving it as an auto is best, but as I personally don't like the 3sp going for the later 4sp auto box will give better cruising.  I think there's a couple of mods you have to do to get it to work but it's been documented on this site already.

Ultimately though it's your car, you're driving it, up to you what you do.

  11. I'd best go buy a litre of whisky for the duration of reading one of his listings then....

Edit:  I see there seems to be a good amount of bidding even within a couple of hours of it starting.  A cynic might suspect friends shill bidding to inflate the price.

  12. You'll get better answers shortly, but if you're waiting at the moment...

Oil light sounds fine.  It should go out as the engine is cranked/started as the oil is pumped and pressure builds.  If it stays on you have a problem.

Have you got spark at the plugs.  Take each out in turn and rest the contact on the block as someone cranks.  You should see a spark.  Now's a good time to also clean and gap them correctly.

Re fuel filter, you could remove the fuel line and point it in a container to see if it's pumping.  You could also try a thimble of petrol direct into the carb to see if you get life.  As you say it doesn't get used much is the fuel OK as it does degrade over time.  TBH I've had engines run on fuel a couple of years old but it doesn't run that good.
