    Paint code

CNAE looks like a 2 tone colour scheme code and CN is velvet blue, but neither my mk1 or mk2 parts books show a paint code AE. The country/plant code at the start of the vin would normally be BA, for a British, Dagenham built car, so SB is new to me. Any idea where it's built? Tommy
  2. If your 66 car still has the 4 bolt crank engine fitted, rather than the later 6 bolt crank engine from a mk2, then the crossflow flywheel is no use to you, as its a 6 bolt flywheel. Tommy
  3. Sorry Hans, but I really can't understand the logic in breaking such a solid mk1 2 door, for want of a days work to fit a wiring loom and a pair of front seats. The wiring in mk1s is so simple and easy to follow, it would have been no bother to junk the spagetti and put it back to standard. (done plenty) Makes me sad to see such a solid rare car get junked :winner: and the racer will just wreck that shell too. Ah well Hans, it's your car, so you are free to do as you please, but  Tommy
  4. 3.77 diff is what you need, 3.54 too high and you won't see much difference between 3.9 and 4.1. 3.77 is mk1 escort mexico, 2000E corsair and mk2 lotus cortina ratio, and I run one in my mk1 lotus. It is a good compromise. I bought a new 3.77 crown wheel and pinion from the axle centre and got it built into my diff, which was a 4.1 and was way too low for quiet cruizing on the motorway. Tommy
  5. Either engine or autobox will have to come out and torque converter then removed, so that flexi plate can be looked at. Ring gear is the first thing to check though, as the engine always seems to stop in one place, so one bit of the ring gear gets worn on start up every time. Should be able to check the ring gear, by removing starter and checking through resultant hole, while somebody turns the engine by hand (remove spark plugs to make it easy). The 9 tooth bendix is the right one, but only the 10 tooth has been available new for years and it tends to eat ring gears. If you need a 9 tooth one I should have an n.o.s. one spare, p.m. me if you want me to have a look. Tommy
  6. Ring gear is the same auto and manual. Auto has a part called a flexi plate that takes the drive from the crank to the torque converter (instead of the fly wheel on a manual). This tends to crack and cause all sorts of bother, and it is hard to find replacements. The flexi plate for an auto mk1 cortina is only common to a mk1 cortina or in line corsair, as the pre crossflow mk2 used a 6 bolt crank instead of 4 bolt. Tommy
  7. The colour would have been signal red 80, which is a rare 1980 model year only colour. I had a mk2 escort 1600 sport in that colour, which got called "the pink sport" by everbody but me. Tommy
  8. Ad says Goodwood green, but looks more like Alpina green to me. Dark green on 66 cars was Alpina green, paint code CM, not Goodwood green paint code BR. Tommy
  9. Looks more like someones fitted a clock to the original cortina gt console, it's smaller in diameter than the corsair gt rev counter and why would anyone fit 2 rev counters, as there's already one in the dash. Tommy
  10. That console is for a in line corsair GT, that's why the big hole, it's for the rev counter. The front pad where the rev counter goes, is the only bit that's different though, all the rest is same as MK1 cortina GT. Tommy
  11. GT steering box has higher ratio, giving approx 3 turns lock to lock instead of about 4. Also has the pin for the handbrake pivot arm, same as a lotus. It's what I fitted to my lotus, when the original packed up and broke the casing. Tommy
  12. Years ago when a friend drove his 1980 1.6L into a rock fall and wrecked the front suspension, I replaced the front suspension with that from my 1976 facelift mk3 and it went straight in. Tommy
  13. If it's on the dvla computer, it shouldn't make any difference wheter it ts a 60s car or not. I was able to get on one of these sites via the internet (but the link I used soon got disabled) and was able to get all the details of a 1964 cortina I used to own, that was last on the road in about 1986. Tommy
  14. Surely motorfactors are able to type your reg into their computer and all your car details including v.i.n. come up for them. Tommy
  15. Count the number of teeth on your starter bendix, the 9 tooth one, which is the correct one, has been N.L.A. for years and only a 10 tooth available new. 10 tooth one worse for chewing up ring gear and itself. If you can find a N.O.S. 9 tooth fit that to your starter. I have run my lotus on a 9 tooth starter for 14 years, without any starter problems, which mk1 and mk2 cortinas used to be famous for. Tommy
  16. chassis V.I.N. plate missing?
  17. Drop arm will be as tight as a nuns chuff, proper drop arm puller and maybe even a bit of heat to get that off. Probably better tackled off the car but should be possible on the car with the right gear. Try somewhere like a landrover specialist, they should have a puller man enough for steering box drop arm removal. Also you need to mark where the arm goes on the splines, so you put it back on in the right place. Tommy
  18. I have back seat belts in my lotus. You need a set of seat belts for a saloon car (not a hatchback) and a set of the captive nut reinforcement plates used to mount harnesses in competition cars. Drill holes in the back shelf to mount the inertia reels and in the floor below the back seat for the other mounts. Fit the reinforcement plates from below and just bolt in your belts. Easy Tommy
  19. 1200 pre crossflow sump no use to you, rear oilseal area totally different, also not sure there would be clearance for longer throw crank (for example a 1300 crossflow escort sump won't fit a 1600 for that reason). 1600 crossflow mk2 cortina sump is what you need. As for the trottle pedal, better mod it like a lotus cortina one, with an extra rod to work a cable throttle welded onto the pedal arm and and a hole higher up on the bulkhead for the cable to pass through. Tommy P.S. Pick up pipe different too
  20. Sierra doesn't have an axle as such, independent rear end , so actually a diff and driveshafts, so no it does not fit. Tommy
  21. These export GT cars are often refered to as Super GT's, as they share the spec of both a super and GT. Before the 66 model came out, GT cars came with deluxe interior trim, except for these export cars which had super interior trim and the super exterior trim strips (66 model GT and super all had same interior trim). Tommy
  22. There is one of those BBC Radio cars for sale in N. Ireland at the moment. It was a BBC Radio Ulster Outside Broadcast car and is still in BBC livery with all the radio gear intact, but needs welding for mot. Tommy
  23. All disc brake ordinary models have them rear mounted. Lotus and gt (P14 caliper) up to Oct 65 have them rear mounted. Gt and lotus from Oct 65 (P16 caliper) have them front mounted. Makes no difference to how they drive (I have run them both ways on my lotus), so if you have them the "WRONG" way for your model, just leave it until the next time it has to come to bits (they always do). Tommy
  24. That's right Steve, struts can be swapped side for side, without problems. Tommy
  25. www.usedcarsni.com Search Ford Cortina and you will get an ad for a nice Crusader estate with 55979 miles on it for £2750. Tommy
