I use ep90 and auto trans 60-40 mix .Running 24v cossie on it and this box has lasted over a year  (was a tip from a road rally driver using 2.8 capris with 5 speed.. he also said mobil 1 seemed to work well)

Proper Type 9 semi synthetic gearbox oil, not tried the mix (but it has been recomended to me) ep 80/90 makes the box stiff to change when cold In my experiance  but not tried it with an aditive.

i use ep90 and a slippery additive like zx1,seems to work fine

I have always stayed away from any sort of anti friction additive in a gearbox, All very well if the gearbox is fubbared, BUT, the change will be made worse by the teflon or silicon in the additive mainly due to syncro rings are designed to momentary grip the gear to help with the change. put slippery stuff in the oil and this does not happen and the gearbox partially loses its syncro, especially when hurrying a change, I have tried a addative in the past and allways crunched 2nd to 3rd, flushed the box out with a 50/50 mix of ATF and Parafin and a 20 mile drive with this mix in the box, and refilled the box with the correct oil for my box, Lovely shift all round,

I use Auto gearbox fluid (ATF) in the type 9's in my cortina & sierra, it's what FORD themselves changed to in the early days of the Type 9 to help with poor gearchanges

No they didn't mate, ford changed to semi synthetic oil to cure the cold change problems, ATF was only used on the MT75 and obv auto's.

 Now I'm confused,I ain't got a clue whats in it at the moment, gear change is stiff when cold,if I hold the knob :tears:when changing it ain't good but if I hold the shaft it's smooth  mind you the lever seems way too long and bend back so pushing down for reverse ain't easy.Open to suggestions, see you at Billings on Sunday

my type 9 also has cold change issues as well, quite hard to get gears 1 and 2 from cold, you have to ram it a bit till it warms up.box is from a 2.8 capri, and has a short-shift fitted also..i've been wondering what to do about it,if theres anything to be done, without having to change the box, which would be a bit expensive for me just now  i do have a better-ratio one from a 2.8 XR4 as a spare,so may get this fitted when funds allow.

2.8 capri has the same ratios as XR4i box.

Don't get me wronge you can use pure AFT BUT a lot of people who have, have reported the box doesn't last, the build tolerences just arn't as good on the type 9 as the MT75 (which does use AFT from the factory) i picked that up from the sierra forum, they are the ones who use em most.

The 5 speed type 9 was a bodge at the worst and a re-hash at best, of the old 4 speed type E which is why it has the same first 4 ratios (in 4 pot form), it was never really designed as a 5 speed unlike the MT which was, and it shows

Back when sierras where new i had loads of cab drivers i serviced for, i changed the box oil to semi synthetic when Ford brought it out and have allways used it since, the only cold change problems i've had has been on boxes with EP in em or stuffed ones

Not saying you can't use ATF or a mix (and i've seen good evidence the mix does work) but the correct oil recomended by Ford is semi synthetic

TBH though even with the correct oil some boxes just shift stiffly when cold, the best box and ones i allways go for on a 4 pot is the CHV 5 speed, very rarely seen one thats goosed, the poor old CVH just don't have the tourque to do any real damage to the box

I agree with Rob  ATF was a popular option when the semi-synthetic cost about 5 quid a litre about 10 years ago but now my local factor sells a generic version for about a tenner for 5 litres so thats what I use, the first couple of shifts are still stiff but after that it's ok.

I take V8Ian's point about additives as well, I bunged in some anti-friction stuff as I was given a gallon for free but I'll try it without next time the oil gets changed.
