Mark 4 Saloon Rear Chassis Rails Are There Differences between Mark 3, 4 and 5 Saloon and Estates

Recommended Posts

Due to rot and multiple and welded repairs added over the years I’m changing the rear complete chassis rails (both sides) on my Mark 4 saloon.

The replacements are the complete genuine Ford panels that would replace the existing rails that run from under beneath the rear seat squab under the boot floor back out to the rear valence. These have the mountings for the upper and lower radius arms, shock absorber and spring mounting points plus on the offside one for the petrol tank straps.

I’ve drilled out all of the spot welds I can find on the nearside one (gone through nearly one Spot Weld cutter) and the only thing (I think) that is still holding it in place are previous welded repairs (cheapo repair section fitted to the lower radius arm mounts).

Before I finally cut the rail off I thought I would ask the question if these rails differ between the Mark 3, 4 and 5 and are they differ between the saloon and estate?

 For the nearside one the Ford sticker shows a Finis C ode is 1472189

 For the offside all I can partly make out a Finis Code which looks like 1587692???

I’m not sure if the Dealer Bin Bloc numbers are any use, these are - for the nearside 182115 and for the offside 163301.

I’ve taken umpteen measurements comparing the existing rails with the replacements and things look ok.

Please can someone confirm that I actually have the right rails? I got a microfiche slide but unfortunately the microfiche reader I could use in work is too small to fit the slide in!

If I can get this work done it will be a major step forward with my Mark 4! I planned to do this work with the time I had off work Christmas but I’ve been putting it off! Although I have done a load of work on the car (for once) this year including rebuilding the front and rear suspension although I need to get the shell finsihed.

So I’ve still got a bodyshell that still needs a lot of work  but now everything that has been removed from the shell has now been replaced with new old stock items or has either been polished painted or powdercoated ready to be re-fitted. I started working on the car in spring 1991!

Many thanks for your help.

All the best

Stephen
