MOT failed

Recommended Posts

Yeah but from my understanding on the new computerized system the advisories get logged on the system too, so if the items that are advised on arnt done then cant they still do you for it if they wanna be funny?

For things like brake pads getting low, or maybe tyres begining to get a bit short of tread depth, I think advise lists are great. I tend to treat things like that as a "to do" list, and as has been said above, if the work isn't done and you're involved in an accident, theres nothing there down to the tester as he can prove that he's not just spotted the potential problem, and also told you (and the ministry) about it.

However, this guy has proved himself a right muppet in suggesting that the car is dangerous because of the lack of a servo

This sounds like it`s getting out of hand.

The tester has a job to do. Make sure the car he is MOTing is up to the

mininum stanards which are very low to start with.

If you had an accident and you wernt informed about an item which maybe

faulty or worn out, and it had just been MOTd who`s fault would it be then?????

The tester may not have any mechanical background at all.

But a weeks course later he can MOT car`s!!! Strange but true.

At the end of the day rules are rules.......

I'm with you on this thats why i don't look for a backstreet MOT. The MOT guy has been doing my car on and off for years. In fact I changed MOT centres because he had. He did have an off on the Cortina a few years ago when I first MOTed it (it failed badly) his advisory note said it had excessive welding (it did'nt fail on the welding). When he moted it the next year nothing. On the whole (about 20 mots over 5 cars) I consider his work fair (the fail this year was down to me as I should have spent less time enjoying the car and more time checking it). I'm quite happy to take full responsibility for my car (I don,t like anyone else touching it) but next year when I go for the test his comments may affect the outcome of the test. I do wonder if he should have refused to test or is that another minefield?

I agree with chimpteaser, always take mine to a garage that understands older or in your case modified cars.

With respect to the ATS chap he is used to seeing standard up to say 12 year old cars day in day out, so your's probably confused him. Everbody looks over their shoulder these days, and follows the rules to the letter.

paul if its advised this year rightly or wrongly it wont have any effect on next years test, when a car is tested it doesnt show the advise sheet or failure from the year before, go in and ask him why its dangerous for it not to have a servo and see if he can explain, i doubt he will be able to, if he cant then ask him to sort the advise sheet out or you will be going to vosa, simple and effective, but, give him the chance to explain if he can

I'm going to list my mods on a bit of paper and I hope he will give me the chance to go through them with him. Its got to be better to try to get him onside if possible. My NEW mods this year are the zetec and the steering rack so that must be what has rattled him. Of all the anglias and cortinas (mk1&2) on the road a fair few must have gone R & P without crashing so it's hardly an untried conversion. If I can't talk to him i will have to go elsewhere in future. Funny thing is I was planning a 260-280 disc conversion with a servo anyway (so little time). If I get him onside and then go irs i will tell him first.

As Darren says "Ask what the problem is" he may of spotted somthing you are missing. If he cant explain take it somewhere else.

I have taken mine to a few differant test stations round here and not one has mentioned anything about the modifications maybe he dont understand. he maybe just used to some plastic mordern machines

just phoned my mot man, he said go and see him and get him to understand the mods, the advisory will not be visible to the next m o t er unless he searches for it on line (and they havnt got time to do that)! if you take it somewhere else, it will bring it to vosa attention as this automatically gets flagged up! good luck!

I will have finished going through the rear brakes by tomorrow evening so it should be ready for a retest wednesday. Thanks for making calls. I feel much calmer now. Spare Zetec is in the garage ready for a head clean up when i get the time. I am really looking fowards to going out for a blast when I get past this little hiccup.

Damgerous to drive due to mods?

The handbrake failure on the red form I can understand. thats 16% efficiency on your handbrake, iirc you need 20% for MoT (I'm sure one of the resident testers will sort it out for sure)

The orange form? I've never even seen one! What I would do is this, go back to the testing station, ask for form VT17 (complaint to VOSA) Fill it in, send it to the local office and wait. A man from the ministry will want to inspect the car, and lay down the law as to if you are correct or the tester.

gutted for you, like you said, mine is very similar (capa axle, no servo, zetec) and I didn't have any trouble. Mind you, I use the same testing station as my local Morgan/vintage specialists, so he's used to and sympathetic with old cars.

hi foot brake has got to be 50% and hand brake has got be 25 % on that car

Its funny what some mot testers advise on. The cortina i just bought had one saying the car had underseal underneath, where was he expecting to find it?

have several mates that have worked for various fast fit places & they aren't interested in you only the money they can get due to crap pay topped up by bonuses.

its been said before find a good test station/garage or indeed any workmen etc, that relys on customer loyalty & word of mouth advertiseing rather than special offers & you should get good service.

as for haveing a family to support thats his problem not yours, report him, if he can't spell correctly & he fills in yours or someone elses cert then its invalid.

try explaining to plod why your cert is wrong.

if your plumber does a job wrong you report him he gets a bolloking his family suffer , again not your prob so why is he any different, i've never had high responseability jobs but have made myself ill before worrying that i've not done a good enough job.

again not the customers fault.

cant be arsed with the silly comments anymore, not all fast fit workers are JUST exhaust fitters, why not just speak to the guy instead of condemning him, too much watch dog culture present here and when did it invalid a certificate because the guy cant spell, bring forward the scholars, if someone does a wrong job for me i confront him first to give him the chance to put it right not go behind his back and report him straight away, what a load of crap............

Oh dear, the tester does seem to have just put in a bit of a knee jerk reaction on the form even if as stated he is just covering his .. However, I agree that you should go and speak to him about it before putting any complaints in. You can only make him a better tester (and a new alli for next years test) by enlightening him to it. How old was the tester? Is he young and relatively inexperienced in proper cars?

Good point, out tester is 22, and scared of our 36 year old Mk1 SWB transit. :winner:
