Dont hurt me,I want to fit a Essex V6 into a mk5 and drift it!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Introduction wise I am from South Africa and made a home for myself in the east midlands for the past 6 years.I have owned Mk3 and Mk4 Cortinas all my life, all with v6 essex engines fitted as standard. At the moment I own a 4wd Nissan Skyline which I use for drag racing.

But I miss the . puckering rear end thrill of a lively V6 Cortina.I purchased a Essex V6 and spend my time 24 hours a day on e-bay collecting bits!

Now the big question is,is there anybody out there drifting their Cortina? Some might think it's a crime but it cant be worse than rally or banger racing it!Besides 4 door rwd vechiles are very big in the drift world these days.!

I'm in the process of rebuilding the V6 to a bullet proof spec, and then to purchase a Mk 4/5 Cortina and slot the engine in.Will a Cortina with 2 litre pinto(Crusader) gearbox, and the diff be able to cope with the torque?I got a v6 bell housing, and will it fit the 2 litre pinto gearbox?Money is also tight and a LSD would be a luxury.I was thinking of carbon freezing the running gear, and then welding the diff.Any tips or info in this regard will be greately greately apreciated.Diff ratios, type of gearbox, tires, oil, plugs, wheel diamiter.etc.

CHEERS!!!!

you cant beat a Cortina with a essex 3.0 IMHO....mines a mk4 originally from Joburg....

having said that fittibg a 2.8 cologne would be easier if you can get a 2.3 donor car....

As for drifting it, well I wouldnt but I doubt anyone on hear will lynch you, at least you aqre bangering it....

if its specifically for drifting - any spec cortina will do

if its for road use - best to start with a 2.3 - better ratio diff.

ive got a 2.8 cologne in my mk5 so i can't really advise on essex fitment, but drifting is certainly possible with the cologne too :icecream:

note: the essex cortina from S.A. had a different rear axle fitment than the UK version

Only the MK5 XR6 Mike, the mk4 3.0s used the same axle set up as the UK I think, sure Richard will confirm.

I've fitted two MK3 2 litres with the Essex.

First one I used a Granada motor with 2000E Corsair manual box....2 litre Cortina axle (same ratio as 2.3, if from saloon - 3.44:1).

Second one I fitted an Essex out of a Capri, with the better tubular manis, and auto box already with the engine (cos I felt lazy).

Used 2.3 axle, but any 3.44 will do.

What wasn't available to me at the time was the 2.8i Capri axle, and I'd have fitted that with the LSD.

I still prefer the old Essex...torquier than the 2.8 (which I've had in TVRs), and probably more tuneable anyway, unless you strap a turbo on the Cologne.

If you get a 3 litre with manual box, that will go in too.

With these transplants you just need to juggle around with propshafts, engine/gearbox mounts, etc, but all are interchangeable.

I used the 3 litre Essex rad' incidentally, and it bolts straight in and works.

I used 2.3 corty exhaust system with flexis to connect to manifolds, but twin pipes would sound better, though more awkward to fit.

My cars were used as daily drivers, and the second one covered 20,000 miles in a year, with only problem being a knacked diff pinion bearing, but I put that down to the axle being from a fire-damaged car.

Always planned to put a Jag IRS on mine. ...but that was before Sierras ....hmm :icecream:

you'll need the matching 3.0 gbox as the pinto box is different cheapest way is as follows

use a late 2.0 car as your base

3.0 eng & box from capri or mk1 granada, + rad

v6 cortina exhaust systems are getting expensive & hard to find prob cheaper to build one

2.0/2.3 cortina prop (mk3/4/5).

axle 2.0 (3.75:1) optional 3.44:1, or 2.3 std (3.44:1) fit the matching speedo drive gear into 3.0 box.

340lbs frt springs (2.3 vhd)

cortina auto gbox cradle (as 3.0 box has mount further back. homemade eng mounts.you can use the original throttle, clutch & speedo cables

built several to this spec
