Hi, I,m not quite sure how this is done, but I think it involves boring out the block to the max and putting in pistons from a 1300cc engine. Make sure that you have a 711M block or you risk thin walling the block and cutting in to the water jacket. Some of the good engine overhaul shops will be able to tell you more.

I have found this book to be a good reference for what can and cannot be done and what should be done. Ignore the price, you should be able to find one cheaper, I'm sure there are plenty here who have a copy.

Can't help you with engine work prices as I am in Australia and the Government here subsidises all Hot Rod modifications so they're free. :headscratch:

The 1300 piston theory is to increase compression due to the smaller volume combustion well in the piston top nothing to do with bore size.

To take a 1600 xflow from 1600 to 1760 requires boring the cylinders from 81mm to 85mm, and there used to be some forged 85mm pistons available from Hepolite for this job (Hepolite Powermax 18954KR).

There was a chap at the autojumble at the Mk1 Cortina Owners Club's National last year who had a set for sale, I think the price was around £250 for a complete set.

Other than that, you can always buy a set of new forged 85mm Accralite pistons from Burton (at around £150 each...).

See http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/cflow.htm for info on tuning the xflow.

And have a look on eBay for the old "Tuning 4 cylinder Fords" book (much better than the other book mentioned above).

aye, good point - the MkII Cortina 681M blocks aren't really safe to bore out to 1760. You've really got to think of 1700 as a maximum, and even then that'll be right on the limits for most of them. Much better to find a 711M (or later) if you really want to go as far as 1760
