stoneymk5 0 Posted April 28, 2013 Hi mate great thread....your tapping noise does sound very much like a moving liner... but if iam honest cheap hydraulic lifters can give a similar symptom in the rover v8 a company call ALLMAKES make alot of them and are renowned to be of good quality when to be honest they are not they are pants !! but alot of people opt for these at about £6 a pop as apposed to genuine ones at £16...if you are to look at it your self then when you remove the heads clean the block face thoroughly and inspect each cylinder closely ...around one or more of the cylinders will be a dark ring of 1/2mm or less but will be all the way around the cylinder ...this will be the faulty liner and the noise you will be hearing is the liner taping on the combustion ring of the head gasket...10w/40 engine oil is NOT to thin it was the grade that rover recommended from around 1989 - 2002 when the v8 was last used in the P38 Range Rover... those that are using 20w/50 is just a vain attempt to mask the noise of either worn lifters or worn camshafts ...i have worked at / ran a Land Rover / Range Rover specialist for the past 13yrs this used to be quite a common issue. Hope it all works out for you mate and use top hat liners if you can get them
MK5 V8 1 Posted April 29, 2013 thanks for the advice stoney, the oil was just to see if it was the problem, but it didn't make any difference, i'm going to check the lifters next to see if there is a faulty one or two, but i'm sure it is a liner, i remember saying to the guy who rebored the block that one of them looked a little low and he just said "that'll be alright the gasket will take that up" i took his word for it as i've never built a v8 before and he's supposed to be the expert, but if it was loose then i'm surprised it didn't move while it was being machined, but i think i have found the offending liner the one with the piston at the top, but the strange thing is the tapping sounds like its coming from the right bank, even the mot bloke said that and he knows a thing or to about v8's, i just need to investigate it really. MK5 V8 1 Posted May 1, 2013 well i stripped the carb and manifold off tonight and i think i found the problem, one of the lifters was soft, i checked all the others and they were hard so i'm sure i have a leaky lifter and that's whats causing the tapping, so i'll get a new one and hopefully problem solved......phewwwww, i didn't really fancy pulling it all apart again

MK5 V8 1 Posted May 2, 2013 got the new parts ordered today, had to buy a complete set of lifters as they don't sell em as a single item, but hey plenty of spares, i just hope it's the cause of the problem
MK5 V8 1 Posted May 6, 2013 oh well, got it all put back together today with the new lifter in and it still taps ..... so the engine will have to come out. i'm gonna get the block tested and find the dodgy liner and get a new one fitted...i'm hoping it won't take too long

MK5 V8 1 Posted May 8, 2013 (edited) well the engine is out and stripped ready to take to the machine shop. on closer inspection i can see the damage on the head gasket where the liner has been hitting it, just a small area of the combustion ring about 30mm around the edge, it don't half make a loud tap though! Thanks for the support there jim, i'm half way through the job now and forgotten about that bit already, but my body hasn't :) Edited May 8, 2013 by MK5 V8

MK5 V8 1 Posted May 11, 2013 well the guy at the machine shop has had a quick look and reckons the liners are ok and that is not the problem...i do hope he's right as i don't want to put it all back together and it's still tapping, it might be that i put one of the pistons round the wrong way.......he's gonna have a good look at it and hopefully solve the mystery

That's awkward. As you say, you don't want to put it back together, just to find it still taps. Fingers crossed.
