MK5 V8 1 Posted June 9, 2013 Well a little update......i still don't know whats causing the tapping, after rebuilding the engine for a second time, had the crank polished as some sh*t that must have been lurking in the block somewhere knackered the mains, new bearings all round, gaskets etc.. refitted last weekend and fired it up. all was well and then it started tapping again . i got it taxed and took it out for a spin and it seemed to run really well, accelerating there was no tapping and cruising along was the same but on deceleration the tapping came back, so now i'm thinking it's still a problem with the lifters. i fitted an oil pressure gauge and i'm getting 40psi from cold start on idle and when warm it drops to 10 psi on idle but holds steady at 40 while cruising. i have been looking around to try and find an answer to how much pressure i should be getting but am getting conflicting info, some people have about 5 psi and others have 20 on idle, some people are saying the rover v8 relys on oil volume rather than pressure others are saying the opposite. i just don't know what to believe. i had it idling at about 1500 rpm and 20 psi of pressure and there was no tapping at all, so now i'm thinking this might be the root of the problem. i took the oil pump to bits and have found some wear in the cover plate and the gears look a bit rough, so this is my next job to sort out, really gutted i missed going to the yat though

GhiaMk4/5 207 Posted June 10, 2013 My V6 engine in my Capri ran low pressure when hot, switched to fully synthetic and pressure is nearly off the gauge when cold and half way when hot, worth a try.
MK5 V8 1 Posted June 10, 2013 Well i spoke to the engine man i use and told him what i had learned, he says that 10 psi on idle is to low to fill the tappets properly and i need at least 15 to 20 so at least i have something to go on now, i've ordered new oil pump gears and a higher pressure relief spring so if i see more than 40 psi on cold startup then i think im going in the right direction, as for oil, the problem i have is that so many people have different opinions on what oil to use, 10w40 semi, 20w50 mineral and different makes also, i'm stuck with what to use. fingers crossed the new pump sorts it out
MK5 V8 1 Posted June 23, 2013 i think this car is jinksed, i fitted a new oil pump, fired it up, 50psi of pressure when cold and 18-20 when hot, but it's still tapping, i arranged to take it over to the engine man last tuesday so he could have a listen and maybe come up with an answer, on my way there i had to stop an a junction, the driver of the car in front of me then decided he didn't want to go forward but to reverse into me, lucky for him he had a tow bar so no damage, unlucky for me he had a tow bar and i now have a nice dent with cracked paint in the front valance....... somebody somewhere doesn't want me to have this on the road, any way, i got to the engine man and he's convinced it's still an oil pressure problem, i'm now not so sure as after looking for ways to increase it (as oil pressure doesn't come in cans apparently)i may have found an answer......dirt in the lifter, if there is any dirt trapped between the side wall of the lifter and the plunger then as it heats up the dirt stops the plunger from working properly.....causing noisy tappets, so this is my next task, find the noisy one, drop the coolant again, remove the offending tappet, strip, clean and refit and if the problem persists then i think it's off to a remote field and set fire to the blooming thing :shocking:

GhiaMk4/5 207 Posted June 23, 2013 When he reversed into you, he damaged the engine as well didn't he !!!!  Every cloud has a silver lining.

MK5 V8 1 Posted June 23, 2013 (edited) Oh man! That is seriously bad luck. I do hope the bloke with the tow bar is coughing up for the damage. well he did say he would, just waiting to get the quote from the paint shop. rover V8's have poor oil pressure 15-20 psi at tickover is about right & 40 at revs, haveing hydraulic tappets meens reg changes & good oil are a must. yep this is what i keep reading. i must have done ooooh about 10 miles so far and already i have rebuilt the engine twice, changed the oil 3 times, gone through 15 liters of antifreeze, 2 sets of gaskets and shells, so now i am really hoping it's just dirt in a lifter as it's getting really boring now  Edited June 23, 2013 by MK5 V8

Which pump are you using? Which oil filter are you using? Not a silly little one because the crossmembers in the way,if you've got a SD1 pump
MK5 V8 1 Posted June 24, 2013 Did you prime the oil pump with petroleum jelly before firing her up? Which pump are you using? Which oil filter are you using? Not a silly little one because the crossmembers in the way,if you've got a SD1 pump yes i filled oil pump with petroleum jelly, it primed up ok, i'm using the correct pump and oil filter (britpart), i now know the oil pressure is not the problem, i had it running and then in turn took each of the plug leads off and hey presto took one off the r/h bank the second cylinder and the tapping stopped, put it back on and the tapping came back, so this is the problem cylinder, which happens to be the one i thought the liner was moving in originally, but before i revert to taking the engine out for a third time, i'll check the lifters...... i'm not gonna let this beat me
stoneymk5 0 Posted July 6, 2013 Right engine oil is 10w40 semi not mineral semi!! looking at your picture that you posted of the block ( after my previous post ) the pic aint clear but on zoom iam sure i can see atleast 2 liners that appear to have been moving....you can change the oil as much as you like but until you either change the block or have it re-linered your tapping will almost certainly persist!! but hey what would i know ive only been building / working on rover v8s for the past 13-14yrs !!! sorry if this is abit blunt but it is 1:45 am lol :shocking: if you need any more advic on the engine feel free to pm me good luck with the build
