MK5 V8 1 Posted July 9, 2013 Well stoney, i now know you were right, the liner is moving,i spent hours and many late nights researching this problem before i pulled it out the first time and came to the conclusion the liner was moving, but when a well respected guy in the field of engine remanufacturing says it's not, then you tend to believe him, but i now think he is wrong, i took the head off again today and there is severe damage to the head gasket fire ring where the liner has been pounding it, i spoke to the engine man last week and he is still insisting it's not a liner, but i know he is wrong, i just wish i just got him to fit a new liner in it last time when i took it to him, would have saved all this hassle and cost, so now it's got to come out again....errrrrrhhh Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

MK5 V8 1 Posted August 17, 2013 ok here's an update. finally got the block back from the machine shop yesterday after a month of waiting, complete with 2 new liners and a very nice job too. so on with the rebuild again..... bottom end is now ready to go back in. Would have liked to get it refitted today but with the threat of rain it'll have to wait till tomorrow. once it's back in then it's plain sailing and an end to my troubles ;) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

MK5 V8 1 Posted August 18, 2013 cheers mk5cortinaestate, i hope so too. well the weather was fine today so on with the refit. got the block back in after a lot of up n downing and tooing and frowing it finally slid on the shaft repainted the heads blue and refitted them then disaster struck again a couple of the head bolt washers broke :shocking: so i've ordered another set of head bolts, and at £95 a set i don't want to take any more chances of something else going wrong Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

So, are you going to be have a little chat with the specialist who told you that it was definitely not the liners? too right i am, i had a good chat with him when i picked it up and he still wasn't convinced it was the problem, even after heating the block up to working temp and tapping the liner out :headscratch: i would have thought that's solid proof the liner was loose, but he did say that he has been dealing with V8's for years and this is the first time he has seen this on a 3.5l so i suppose every body learns some thing new That's good news, you definately deserve some luck now, and get some miles on the clock thanks, next stop is the dyno, get it set up properly as it's drinking petrol faster than i drink beer and try and find out why the fuel and temp gauges aren't working, i've changed the voltage stablizer and that didn't work, unless i had 2 duff uns and the fuel sender and temp sensor were also new :headscratch: Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
