stardust silver 2000e

Recommended Posts

Hi all, as can be seen from the (hopefully) uploaded pic i have a stardust silver mk3 2000e which i need to do some local cosmetic repairs to. the problem is although the origin of the paint is stardust silver, it has been resprayed in what seems to be a slightly lighter shade? i know this is a long shot but has anyone any ideas of a ford colour this could be? it is the same light blue/silver as stardust but a bit more silver?? on purchasing a touch up can of ford stardust silver from halfrauds, it was nothing like the old stardust silver!!. any ideas?? ta.

have you bought an aerosol of the colour or just a touchup as in my experience touchups never seem to match(unless solid colours)if you have the aerosol then first off i would get a piece of plastic/card rub it down and prime it then spray the silver on it then lacquer it and then you can check it against the car for a colour match.what part of the car are you painting? metallic paint very rarely matches unless you are blending it into adjacent panels, then there is the problem of (aerosol) lacquer and fadeout spray etc.etc. you can take the car back to halfords and use their colour chips to check by the way. ive tried to paint cars with aerosols and that is why i ended up investing in sprayguns and equipment over the years.

right i've stardust silver listed as 73-77 with 5 shades (81 ault & wiborg catologue)

code is K2

#1 blue shade

#2 dark shade

#3 grey shade

#4 blue/grey shade

#5 blue shade

but the 83 valentine catalogue gives the following variations

#1 stardust/astro silver

#2 stardust (yellow shade)

#3 " " (grey shade)

#4 " " (bluer shade)

#5 " " (red shade)

#6 " " (blue shade)

i've seen over 30 shades of daytona yellow listed between the 4 catalogues i've got?????

If you go down to a paint shop with the car the painter should be able to mix up a color that matches very closely if not identical

I've spent massive amounts of time looking into old Ford paint colours and codes over the last few years and I think I have the answer. It looks to me to be Astro Silver this was available at the same time as Stardust but for a time in 1975 was only available on the Escort Ghia, however I have a Ford technical service bulletin dated 27th June 1975 that states that Ford dealers are confusing Astro Silver with Stardust (probably because Stardust is also known as Aero Silver)and that some cars are being refinished in the wrong colour or wrong paint system. It's madness Ford having two silvers available at the same time one called Astro Silver the other Aero Silver. To confuse things a little more Astro Silver had a different finish it used a special 2 coat lacquer finish. I've been waiting for someone to ask this question ever since I read the technical service bulletin its the kind of information you just cant get anywhere.

I'm pretty sure from the picture its Astro Silver its definately not Strato Silver.

Look on your VIN plate for the colour code, ive got the codes for both colours they are as follows:

Astro Silver H

Aero Silver/Stardust 3

(this will be follwed by your year of manufacture e.g 5 for 1975 6 for 1976)

If you need a mix code for either I may be able to get one for you, I hope ive solved this for you, your car looks lovely in that colour.
