carb problem??

Recommended Posts

drove about 60 miles today and sudenly started loosing power through all gears. i had to pump the pedal to keep her going or keep my foot to the carpet.. as soon as it goes over 1500 rpm the carb makes a sucking sound then wants to cut out. theres plenty of air its like its not getting the fuel??, even though theres plenty of fuel getting to it. im running a 32/36 dgav which i referbed 5000 miles ago and has been fine, on the 1600 crossflow ?? cheers. Dan.

Check the crank case breather pipe for splits if its drawing air it will be very poor

Check for sediment in the float chamber of the carb , fit an in line filter and check the accelerator pump diaphragm.

It may be that the breather for the tank - probably in the cap, is blocked causing a vacuum in the tank, quick check is when it does it again, quickly take the cap off & you may hear air rush into the tank, then try starting the car & see if it has improved,

Hope this helps,

I am not dismissing any of the above, but it could also be the filter in the tank, on the end of the pick up tube. these can somtimes cause funny running problems. I usually take them off and fit an in line filter towards the rear of the car somewhere near the tank. It might be worth a try.

The Condenser is there to smooth out the spark and stop points erosion, when they start to break down the symptoms are that the car will tick over all day but is very reluctant to rev above about 1500 rpm and the engine power is very low. If it is the condenser going the points will fail very soon, usually they weld themselves shut. Best way to check the condenser is to replace it with a good spare or get one off ebay, should only cost you a couple of quid.

Had this on mine a few years back, might be worth having a look at the little filter isn't blocked/dirty in the carb. It's located behind a big brass cap (approx 15mm spanner size) and it's usually under the fuel inlet hose connection. Best of luck with it

ah no sory my mind went blank there, im running an (accu spark) electronic ignition so no points or condensor, and a new coil. it deafinatelly sounds like the carb because it only happens when the engine warms up and the chokes open up, not enough fuel to match the air. but by looking in the top of the carb, and pumping the throtle, fuel squirts out the top jets as usual. but seems strange that it performes as usual when my foots beded right to the floor??
