head gasket?

Recommended Posts

im planning on changing the head gasket on my 1600 crossflow, but i have no history about the engine/ wether its GT or not. will this make a differance on what gasket i buy? all i know is its from a late mk1 escort :/ . also while the head is off, is there any cheap way off adding power? ;) apart from the obvious good old clean :). cheers. Dan.

i would have thought all the gaskets would be the same for the 1600. you could pick up a few horses by flowing the inlet and outlet ports, smoothing out any lumps and bumps, matching the inlet and exhaust manifolds to the head ports and making sure the gaskets dont interupt the flow. there are many ways to extract power but it does cost, naturally aspirated tuning can work out very expensive for little gains

The GT head gasket is different from the std 1600 in that the GT gasket is reinforced with copper.

Ok , so could you put a GT gasket on if its a standard??

Is it because you have one? The GT ones are usually dearer.

I can't see why not though.

No i dont have one yet but i would like to have one ready so i can take the head off and get the whole job done in the same day like. dont mind spending abit more for a descent one.

I see, You'll only really find out if it's a GT when you take the head off & see what gasket is on there. There's no visable difference with just the head off apart from that between a GT & an HC.
