mr Costin 56 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) The green one in Plymoth were at Stratford. I had a chat with the owner. Very nice bloke and car but not even on the top ten list of oldest Cortinas. I did not manage to get my -62 (no 236 built in june) back together for the Stratford show due to letting someone else paint it for me and the car is now ermine yellow instead of ermine white. Will do it properly myself during the autumn. For Colins observations about Anglia pieces in the car he is working on he is correct. The "washers" behind the inside door opener and window winders are Lombard grey, so are the winder knops, and all have 105E numbers according to the spares part catalogue. Also the rear seat ashtrays are grey. The hole in the tunnel for the gearstick is round and has an Anglia grommet for the gearlever. The early cars were not fitted with windscreen washers from the factory until august. The car I bought recently (no 512 also june) has Anglia pump and aftermarket washer fluid container. I bought 236 10 years ago and then I fitted Cortina proper bits to it and threw the other crap away, that probably had been there since the car was new. I did not know then what I know today. Headlight bezels were chromed steel. Rear bumper was special during first production months and that type of bumper was never available as a spare part. It says in the spares part catalogue that when you order a new rear bumper you shall change side of the brackets to make the new bumper to fit the brackets. consul315 180 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) blimey that´s very interesting Bertil! was good to meet you at Stratford and a pity you couldn t make it with this particular car, hope i have the chance to see it in reality once. :headscratch: never seen this bumper before nor did i know about existance! i too bought my 10/62 car in 1995, not knowing then it would be one of the older ones around, though of course not as rare as yours. unfortunately mine must have some (badly repaired) front damage in earlier days, as one of my headlamp rims is of the later type (i gladly have the correct one, but never managed to fit it within 17 years of ownership :sofa:) and there is plenty of filler on the wing and parts of the slam panel have been exchanged to the later type. apart from that it´s fairly original and has done the 3.200km drive witout major problems (execpt dirt in the fuel tank which i should have cleaned before setting off). please send some more pics of this rare beauty, cheers Hans Edited August 21, 2012 by consul315

Our really early mk1 had that windscreen washer bottle as well - we thought it was aftermarket :shocking: It had a new rear valance fitted so later bumper bracket spacing and no window winders etc in it

mr Costin 56 Posted August 22, 2012 Our really early mk1 had that windscreen washer bottle as well - we thought it was aftermarket :shocking: I did to when I bought the first -62 (236) 10 years ago, but it was not the same though. Threw it out and fitted the "correct" Cortina stuff... I will finish off 236 and bring it to UK that is a promise. The thing with theese two cars is that 236 has been on the road since day 1 with very short interruptions and have been worked on in every corner. 512 has been in a barn since 1979 and is untouched except for frontwings and front panel replacement after a crash in 1969. 236 has had 6 owners, 512 is a two owner car, first owner had it only for a couple of months. I must say I had no clue about theese very special early car features before I got 512. All of it is missing on 236, except for the ash trays and gearlever round hole of course. Both have the early throttle linkage. 512 ended up in storage after someone walked over the car damaging the roof and other panels. The guy was on drugs or something and walked on several cars at the same time. 512 had not full insurance and was put away. Probably that incident saved the car to our days, because if it not had happened it would have been worn out, rusty and probably scrapped instead. It needs welding to the regular places and some serious panel beating to the roof. But it is possible to do it up without doing all so to speak.
