Electric Power steering

Recommended Posts

Hi has anyone ever had a go at fitting elec power steering to a Cortina? I am looking at the Corsa b units as they look like they can be made to fit most cars any ideas.

Its a very popular mod with the Escort Rally boys so if it fits an Escort no reason I can see why it wouldn't fit a Cortina.

This is an interesting one that i was thinking about for my mk2 tina with a v6 lump .A couple of years ago i passed an old type MOT garage when on hols and noticed a mk2 tina outside it .I stopped and spoke to the fella who did the MOTs there and he said any car that has had the steering column cut and welded would not be ok for an MOT .I work with a bloke who is an experienced mechanic who has built quite a few hotrods in his time and he said when he has done the columns he cuts them on an angle and welds them .He also drills the column and puts a pin through the join and then welds a sleeve around it .

Corsa c are the ones you want. Or meriva. Would buy brand new as older ones were recalled because they eventually went heavier one way than the other

Cheers for the replies guys I may well take the plunge and give it a go as with the v6 lump and a small steering wheel its a little heavy on the steering. About the MOT it could be right some testers may get funny but, but I would doubt most would even know it was done as the motor would be behind the dash so they wouldn't even notice it. I will have a hunt around for the parts and see how it goes.

Now that`s a tidy job I think the hardest part will be sourcing a donor pre face lift steering rack in my case

Doesn't seem to be a lot of room on a Mk3.....

As far as MOT goes, if you can't see it you can't test it!

No not on early ones but then again is there much more on a mk1 escort. I got my Ecu and loom up behind dash on that side of the car so would have a wee bit of a re-wire to do but I think its do able.

And my Mot tester sure woudnt see it biggrin.gif

Surprisingly there's more room in the escort.
