AndyGhiaMK4 2 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) hi after coming back from the ace last saturday there was a strong smell of petrol from under the bonnet, had allok but could not see any leaks, i have renewed all the petrol pipes under the bonnet as mine were still orignal factory items car has only done 28000 from new now, but while there took airfilter off and found the carb looking like this, any ideas please, sorry about picture, but one side of carb really clean the other is really black Andy Edited September 18, 2012 by Andy39
BRAEBURN 0 Posted October 31, 2012 Because the carb is progressive, then only one side of it will get used until you get to high revs. My carb looked the same as that after a 500 mile running in period. After that I started accelerating harder, and the barrels have evened themselves out, and look about as dirty as each other. Do you drive pretty gently? Also, I found that the butterfly linkage on the back of my carb was fouling on one of the pivots, before the second butterfly had a chance to open, hence only using one side of the carb. Remedied this, and much better acceleration. Not sure about the fuel smell, but if only one butterfly is opening, maybe your car is running rich at high revs due to the accelerator pump dumping fuel into the second choke, but no air getting in?
