I think this was covered a while back dodgy fuel pipe :headscratch:

 

 

So i checked the ones i was taking off my MK3 ..The pipe shown below was only fitted about 2 years ago . :shocking:

 

The outer pipe showing signs of was splitting... I then folded the pipe it just split wide open . But at that time the inner looked ok . :thumbup:

 

I had another look at the pipe yesterday and where the outer part of the pipe had split exposed the inner section.

 

I bent it back and forth a few times and the inner just snapped... It seams that maybe air/oxygen must have got to the inner section it and made it deteriorate. ( within a few weeks ) as the inner pipe was be quite flexible about 3 weeks ago . :shocking:

 

i cant see all the writing on the pipe ... This is all i can see

... and if you're buying some, be aware that there are people on ebay flogging hydraulic hose as fuel hose. Now I'd only get mine from a motorfactors, making sure its marked 'unleaded fuel'.

As you know tibbs, my pipe had frayed too, but I have come to the conclusion that we are over tightening the clamps. The factory original clips barely put any pressure on the pipe, but a lot of people including me have stuck jubilee clips on and because its fuel involved do it up like its a coolant pipe!

I took the engine out my orange mk3 yesterday and found the pipe to the pump was frayed, but to the metal pipe on subframe was like brand new. Why was this? Well it didn't have a jubilee clip on it and was just interference fit

are you sure it is nt the ethanol petrol additives doing it? supposedly a problem now they are adding it (he didn't have jubilees half way down the pipe I assume?

No but when it frays it exposes the inner so it probably starts degrading......

 

There's not much in the world would be able to stand tibbs bending it in half!!!!!

I posted my reply from my phone, it does appear that the pipe is substandard rather than the same issues I have had...tis scary!

After looking at another fuel pipe i took off the car ..( which is ok ) .

 

The pipe that has the splitting problem-- does seam to be quite stiff and a less flexible in comparison

there's been warning about ethenol destroying rubber/neoprean pipe it rots the neoprean liner then attacks the rubber out apparently, neoprean was bought in cos unleaded rotted normal rubber.

there's been a few fires latley caused by it, a few Mk1 and 2 escorts and possably a ferrari last week, all had pipes over a year old, it seems worse the more the vehical sits or so it seems, the fuel isn't as stable as it was and breaks down ??

Of course there is also loads of cheap chinese cr@p out there as well but a lot of the pipe seems to come from well know manufacturers, been following the problem for a few years now :(

I've just fitted silicone to my daily to replace some old pipes - like these: ASH.

 

Not cheap but wondering whether it's worth the extra for the Cortina. Any views?

CHECK and change..... or just change them....if theres a safe alternative then I,m going down that route ...look into the ASH ones :thumbup:

Iv'e used Earls braided Teflon fuel hose on mine, had an engine fire some years ago due to dodgy fuel hose.....

I've never managed to find fuel pipe that's lasted particularly well in recent years. I can remember one particular MOT when the tested went to check the fuel line going up to the carb. As he pulled on it, it split and covered everything in petrol. I wasn't too happy about it at the time (don't like getting fails at MOT time) but kinda please it went when the bonnet was open and not later, un-noticed while driving.

also watch out for the webber carbs, the inlet pipe insert pulls out real easy and pumps fuel all over the engine. as happened to me last year. luckily engine stalled from lack of fuel, pulled th ebonnet to see th epipe hanging out. fuel everywhere including on the exhaust. keep a fire extinguisher in the car.
