I run my 150 amp Snap On mig on a 13 amp plug, same for extension leads, touch wood, never had any problems with blowing fuses or surging, used it in an up to date building with breaker fuses and it wasn't a problem, only complaint I get is that when I'm welding it inteferes with the strip lights, makes them flicker and unfortunately one of the office staff suffers from migraines, so I can only weld when she's not in the building.

Just check Darren its 240v but should be standard 240 3pin plug, and as for the extension just DONT be using a 50metre lead with 49 meters rolled up as with anything electrical that draws high current.. :thumbup:

Jayne, you can't say that. All the old cars have been restored by any means possible, engine's, diffs, glass, suspension, interior, bodyshells (or bit's thereof....) the list is literately endless.

 

You'll be pleasantly susprised that in this day and age of modern car breaking, demand will allways outstrip supply.

No, but if I had space-framed a car I'm not sure I'd have a magazine article printed showing what I'd done.

:wacko: Okay...power for the welder. It has no plug on it, from what I have read this is normal. Do I just stick a normal plug on it? From what I am reading on a welding site I wouldn't get any power if I do that and run an extension lead to use it plus I may blow fuses. So how do I power my welder and use it effectively.

 

Hmm, it depends on your electrical installation. If you fit a normal plug with a 13amp fuse then generally the only fuse you are likely to blow is the 13amp one in your plug as your house circuit will be fused at something between 16amp - 32amp.

 

However, if you have a modern electrical installation with MCB "breakers" rather than fuses, then you might find that they trip as you switch the welder on due to the surge current. Fixing that is a job for a qualified electrician as you need to change the type of breaker. I had to change mine as my 110v site transformer kept tripping the MCB.

Ah if modified to that degree they may well and I could well see their point - some of those cars are just kit cars with classic car shapped bodies perched on top.

that's what I did with mine.mine had a normal 13amp plug on and here's the good bit I have a 20ft length of cable(quite thick) again with a plug on to go in the house and on the other I grafted on an extention socket with 4 outlets and to date I've had tripping.i always use a circuit breaker too.

Give it a go. My current 130 MIG doesn't trip it, but my old stick welder tripped all the time.

I know what you mean now. I was just trying to say when building a project you will use bits off other cars to help you complete your project.

 

On the modern car front, you will sell the same bits all the time. Take for instance Focus O/S/F window regulaters, i can sell 10 a day but if i only have 3 cars in the yard then i can only help the first three.

Okay.

 

So the welder is working great, just put a plug on it and no problems. I am still practising before I go near the car with it lol. I have been practising without gas but I am going to get some gas and practice with that as I have been told it will be better with gas.

 

Question, is there a best place to buy sheet metal? What type would I need and what size thickness as I am going to be repairing the scutle and also the chassis, around the front floor pan area.

As Jayne say's plenty of options for sheet metal anything from .9 - 1.0mm should cover most any thicker and it gets a little harder to work with ie shape & form.

On the mainland you have a lot more choice for the gas like THIS PLACE

all I seem to get in n.ireland is the small bottles out of any good motorfactors, if you go for the small bottles remember there are 2 sizes 600cc & 900cc 54% more and some places try and sell the smaller for the same PRICE :thumbup: :thumbup:
