westie289 0 Posted December 4, 2013 Hi, got Another problem to add to the list lol, was driving home from work yesterday and the fuel gauge and heater gauge maxed right out and after a couple of minutes it went back down to normal, it's done it a couple of times since. I am absolutely rubbish with anything electrical, so any advice on where to start would be great :D thanks Charley
V6Ghia 37 Posted December 4, 2013 Hi, got Another problem to add to the list lol, was driving home from work yesterday and the fuel gauge and heater gauge maxed right out and after a couple of minutes it went back down to normal, it's done it a couple of times since. I am absolutely rubbish with anything electrical, so any advice on where to start would be great :D thanks Charley This used to be quite a common problem when the car's were under 10 years old and sounds like the voltage regulator which is screwed to the back of the instrument panel. Could be worth checking connections and cleaning, or look for a replacement.
steve&lynette 2 Posted December 4, 2013 Bad earth causes most problems on are cars but could be the voltage regulator.
deltamal 38 Posted December 4, 2013 Mine was doing that last year, changed the sender on the engine block which cured it, make sure you get the right one though, where the small thread is there is a coloured nylon insert, on my Mk3 it's clear/white colour, it has to match the resistance of the dash gauge. bortaf 92 Posted December 5, 2013 It could be the sender IF the fuel gauge didn't also rise, the only thing that controls both is the voltage regulator on the rear of the clocks ?
westie289 0 Posted December 6, 2013 Found a broken earth strap under the bonnet, I'll fix that later on and see what happens, then if not I'll check what you guys have written, thanks for the replys :)
Jason 5 Posted December 6, 2013 If the sender wire is earthed out, it should shoot to the top. Hot, full fuel etc.., I'd check for breaks in the wiring and lose wires behind the dashboard shorting against the clocks. Jason.
