LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 As i am buttoning things up for the winter (too cold to work outside) i thought that starting a thread on my project would be in order. This will be my first full restoration, i am learning things as i go along and taking my time with it, no need to rush things and make a bodge job of it. I bought the car last summer (2013) for 250€, it is almost complete with fairly good mechanical bits but the bodywork has seen it's best days (shocking i know, a rusty cortina ) It had been stored from 1989 in a open field with numerous other cars. It is at least original and unrestored Hoisted on the trailer On our back home (Mitsu not mine) At home WooHoo goodies on the trunk ,keys did not come with the car (seller promised to find them for me, yeah right, still lost  ), anyhow '79 volvo 244's keys worked great. More to come...
LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 Interior not too bad Engine looking rough, but not seized. Stripped and workspace ready (can't weld in garage, would of not have fit in there anyway) UhOh, some work needed :chain:
LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 Passenger side welded Drivers side a-post, not concourse but will do Handy dandy parts washer Off with the engine
LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 Shelf for parts (before) Shelf for parts (after) Engine bay, minus the engine And here she lies, bare naked in the cold :tears: Lots of pics to post, any requests?
Ford1975 2 Posted December 7, 2013 Good start your patch work on the floor looks a good job  Look s like you got a good shell to start with engine bay/inner wings look good. Just keep the updates coming  Regards Kenny
LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 thanks Ford1975, yes inner wings are pretty good, strut tops need some attention though as rust has crept between panels. Chassis rails have gone too, i will need to build a rotisserie at some point. Sadly not much will be happening this winter, not fun welding when it is freezing out (sometimes below -30C in midwinter :shocking: )But this leaves ample time to hunt down parts and such. Here's where i am now, (sorry for the poor picture :bag: ) This is the drivers side wheel well patched up, and was the most difficult panel to make this far, with them compound curves and all. Welds are not ground up yet. Oh and nothing but butwelds in this here car :icecream:
Ford1975 2 Posted December 7, 2013 Yes butt welds make for a better finish (moisture cannot hide the same) Minus 30 burrrr, yes I would think it would be a bit cold to work in those conditions :shocking: Looks like a nice place you live surrounded by the trees, yes and a spit/rotisserie are a great piece of kit saves allot of bending down and lying on you back. I made 1 for my current project made it adjustable so I could pick the car up of axle stands (1 man job)
BSV205F 0 Posted December 7, 2013 (edited) Thats amazing condition for lying in a field since 1989  I have had worse condition Mark 2's here in Scotland after driving through just 1 winter of snow and road salt!! :poo: Good luck with your resto Edited December 7, 2013 by BSV205F
the-ford-cortina.com 226 Posted December 7, 2013 good project your in Finland?
LagoonBlue 133 Posted December 7, 2013 good project your in Finland? Yes, Finland it is. Cortinas don't seem to be so popular in here parts (exluding MK1's), everyone seems to be after Escorts but it was  at first sight for me with this one, hard to explain why, those classic lines maybe?. Prices of full cars are reasonable in Finland (http://www.nettiauto.com/ford/cortina) but even basic parts are pain to find locally, luckily Royal mail prices seem moderate to us (yes it's that bad with Finnish post  ) Maybe i will strike a deal or two at BSC... I will do the best i can with my project, maybe it will not be a show stopper but it definitely deserved to be saved from the crusher. I think this one will take me two to three years to do, mostly weekends and holidays due to work but really cant wait to make that first ride :) And sorry i forgot to mention, this one is 1968 (series 1) model from Dagenham. LagoonBlue 133 Posted January 5, 2014 Thanks to warm weather(+2 degrees or so) and a long weekend i had the chance to work with Cortina, a little bit anyway :) I made a small patch panel to the left inner sill, and welded it on. Old hard drive magnets are really handy for alignment Spotwelded Fully welded And welds dressed, no need to grind all the way down as that will weaken the joint. Will be hidden anyways  Not perfect but will do

mr Costin 56 Posted January 6, 2014 Nice project. I bought a lagoon blue Cortina standard in Karesuando about 15 years ago. It was really good, sold it to Norway after a while. Btw, where is the fern green car you cut the floor repair section from?

Btw, where is the fern green car you cut the floor repair section from? Thanks  Here is the link to my donor car: http://www.buysellcortina.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/57194-cn92-vin-number-in-mkii/ It is now resting in pieces, rust had gotten the better of it so i salvaged from it all i could. Roof and scuttle were in ok nick so i saved them if some one else might need those, rest was pretty bad. Seller had two more MK2's in the same lot and at least one more at a different location, weird fella though
