LagoonBlue 146 Posted September 14, 2014 Time for my weekly update. Brushes were ok in my Dremel so off to warranty for that. Good that i have a cheapie knock off that i can use in the meantime. Finished the seat belt anchor point. Fabricated reinforcement panel to the wheel tub, has to be there for a good reason considering how frugal uncle Ford was. My guess would be that it's main function is to trap all the mud and crud between panels  Not the prettiest but then again it does not need to be, though i will grind those weld seams some more. Small patch again. Recreating the inner wheel arch lip. Other side came out ok so i am using the same technique here. And that's all for this week, slow but progress all the same
G.O 20 Posted September 18, 2014 slow but progress all the same  I know just what you mean about slow progress - I went over to the garage tonight to get a few bits done on the Lotus and I've got 2 propshaft mounts bolted on and the two washer pipes threaded through the bulk head to show for an hour and halfs work! Its quite frightening how so much time seems to get wasted looking for parts, tools, and having to redo stuff. Still, as you say, its all progress....... All worth it in the end though  Some more work on the rear arch: Left plenty of extra material to be trimmed off. Today i could not manage to do any work with the car as i had to go play a plumber to grandmas place. Protip; do not even breathe at valves that have not been touched in decades  Also got a brand new in the box Dremel from warranty, which was nice. LagoonBlue 146 Posted September 26, 2014 Nice work Mr Blue, Forget plumbing then stay welding and fabricating..lol... You can count on that! So, yesterday was another typical day in the trials and tribulations of mine. Woke up for work at 6.35 to be greeted with this sight: I thought that wind had broken the roof but on closer inspection tarp had been burnt by UV to consistency of a crisp newspaper, i could poke my finger through it with no effort at all. Lasted what less than a year or so, cheap Chinese :poo: No time to sort that, off to work. Busy day, had to do the work of three at half the time for the pay of one. Got mail from my super; "pop by my cubicle before leaving home" Gave me my two weeks notice for a three week lay-off* (*not sure if the right term? You know the deal, unpaid leave from work due to things slowing down) Off to home then after a full day, could not leave early as i had hoped to do. At home i inspected the damage and made some measurements, went to store and bought a 4x6M tarp and some rope. At this point a splitting head ache was setting in. Ran out off rope so had to go back to buy some more. Tarp was 1,5 inch too short lengthwise, probably won't matter.. Got it sorted as the light was fading; I'll do some tidying up on the weekend, ok for now. Fall storms are coming so we shall see how the new roof holds up. Suffice to say that i was getting mildly annoyed by that point, so called it a day and went to bed. Ah well, could of have been worse i guess.. At least it was not raining that day and i am so very ready to take some time off from work anyway  -Peter

LagoonBlue 146 Posted September 26, 2014 Your laying off work terminology is spot on English That tent roof is knackered but looks like your fix is good  Thanks, phrasing get's tricky sometimes as English is my second language. Came out better than expected in the end, considering that i was thinking on my feet there. Nasty weather outside now, if it's still standing in the morning then i'm a happy camper  .....your welds are beautiful Thanks! I have been improving, at first i had the settings too low creating needlessly thick of a weld and not enough penetration. Seems that the right setting is just at the threshold of burning through. Helps to experiment and having a halfway decent machine does not hurt too. I really do like my Esab, no problems whatsoever with it in the 3-4 years that i have had it.

Apostrophes are a minefield of rules to get right, not many English first language speakers know ALL the rules and I am in the majority of people getting them wrong sometimes. LagoonBlue 146 Posted October 5, 2014 I had time to do only few hours worth of work with the Cortina this week. I'm concentrating my efforts on the right sill and wheel arch as i want to get those sorted before winter, i need to paint the inside before it gets too cold. After that the body should be rigid enough (with some well placed reinforcements) to be hoisted on roll over jig, should be much more ergonomic to work on the underside that way. LagoonBlue 146 Posted October 12, 2014 Some progress again :) I figured that in order to sill end align correctly with wheel arch i needed to sort the wheel arch first. That also meant that i needed to repair rust in the tool well whilst i still had access to it. Drain hole to be drilled later. Rust treatment followed by liberal coat of red oxide primer. 2 part epoxy would have been better but it can be bit of a chore to apply. Even this being multitudes better than factory, at least there is now some paint in there  Followed by coat of rattle can paint and weldthru zinc primer to mating surfaces. Repair panel test fitted in place, little bit of fiddling and surface preparing to do. I opted to butt weld this time around, also note the rounded corners. Learned my lesson from doing the other side :bag:
LagoonBlue 146 Posted October 18, 2014 Arch welded in place; No significant warping this time apart from the very top as i could not fit a dolly in there. Slap some filler on and should be ok. Painted inside of the sill in epoxy primer, outer part not pictured but that is also painted and ready for welding. I had to put heaters in there on account of temperature being below 0C. My daily hack is also in need of some work. Middle muffler needs replacing, notice the highly sophisticated ramp setup  Front wheels are choked, hand brake on and tranny in 1st gear, safety first.. Could not bother to continue past this point today as the weather was not the most pleasant, i needed a day off anyway. Should really send this one to scrappers and get a real car, me being a tightwad again
