Nashy 4 Posted January 6, 2014 How heavy a caravan (mine is a twin axle) can I tow with my mk5 Estate? It's got a 2.0L pinto with a type9 box and a 2.0L Atlas Axle on it with a set of RS 4 Spoke wheels. If that makes any difference. Also VOSA have a test station just 3 or 4 miles down the road from me, would it be worth booking an appointment with them to go on the weigh-bridge. To confirm whether it's overweight or not? Cheers, Aaron. P.S. Yes I'm still alive and have still got ROH54Y. Too much power ... Is never enough .
Danish 294 Posted January 6, 2014 I'm not sure I'd go to VOSA, they're evil enough to do you if you're overweight. I weighed my beavertail at my local quarry. AFAIK there is a general guidance not to tow more than 100% of the car's kerbside weight (a friend claims this is not law, just advice, but I'm not sure). But you can't exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight that is on the VIN plate. I did have a little caravan which was within my Mk3's towing limit, but it was only a 2-berth and about 600kg. littlenewt2067 33 Posted January 6, 2014 Hi Nashy This may be too new to cover Cortinas but gives an idea of weights etc... http://www.towsure.com/static/outfitmatch As Jayne says, look at your vin plate for the weight you can tow
kenbex522 34 Posted January 6, 2014 Most cars since the early 70's will have had a towing capacity written somewhere albeit in an owners handbook workshop manual or something. Originally very few cars had any limits stated anywhere which is where the old don't tow more than 85% of your gross weight theory comes from. These days it would be an offence to tow more than any recommended limits by manufacturer's, and VOSA love nothing more than overloaded cars caravans trailers. I'm sure there is a weight specified somewhere as I used to tow my stock car with a Mk5 Estate back in the day and seem to recall it was in the hand book that came with the car. skodaboy 3 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) I think this all the info you will need. The kerb weight unladen and maximum permissible loaded weight should be on a plate attached to your caravan. as a general rule the caravan's fully loaded kerb weight must be approx 85% of the cars weight. Cortina specs This site is also very useful. towing Capacities  Edited January 6, 2014 by skodaboy
sheffieldcortinacentre 754 Posted January 6, 2014 approx. 900-1000kg for a mk3-5, equating to 15-16 ft body length. most twin axle vans start around 17-18ft.
