lol... I was thinking more about it deteriorating or something breaking, it's just not your normal Mk3 and is a little rare. If something happened to it you would be hard pushed to find another in that colour/engine/year combination... And, you'd be gutted

I thought about having a play in the mk4 yesterday. Getting it out of it's hiding place would of been no problem....getting it back in again would of been a BIG problem due to the street being on a incline. I couldn't even get my daily FWD up the street coz of the snow.

So had some time going over the mk3, it has a major leak in both the front foot wells , door seals seem ok, windscreen leaks slightly in the corners, holds a little bit of water in each corner inside the car, so today i took off the heater box and found what looks like a new gasket folded over , i hoping this is the problem, anyone had water leaks in both front foot wells?? cheers

Take the glove box out and check where the top of the bulk head meets the scuttle and do the same on the drivers side if you can but think the heater gasket is the main cause of your leak?

Is the prop all sorted ,mine had the vibes with 5 speed /twin piece prop ,until i replaced the front rubber doughnut coupling with a UJ.

 

 

The prop shaft on Chris's GXL has had a new rubber coupling, new UJ's and centre bearing and was balanced. The vibration Chris is referring to is through the centre bearing mounting. The very early built Mk3 Cortina's have a different mounting and centre bearing so, I think, the only way to stop this vibration is, as Chris said, is to do away with the centre mounting by replacing it with a single straight prop shaft. Not sure if you've done this yet Chris ?

The car had new door rubbers all round back in 2006 so my guess would be the heater box seals and maybe the gasket under the fusebox ? The windscreen was refitted but without any of the putty stuff that some use. I'd never intended it to get wet so never bothered :ph34r: :D

Cheers pal, the maize looks ace, i dont miss though, the new GXL is better by far, even with its little niggles, , ive just made new gaskets for the heater box and the wiper motor housing had no gaskets and the rubber grommet wasnt attached , i guess its just a little trial and error with leaks, glad you told me the screen has no putty inside Dave, this maybe the cause.

Ive not had the cash to buy the propshaft yet, (bought another Transporter van and converting it into another camper) but its defiantly the way im going to go.

Ill be putting some miles on the Cortina this year, see you at some shows :thumbup:

Rubber couplings do not work properly on Mk3's due to the engine inclination/alignment with centre bearing/rear pinion angle,and is made worse by the longer 5speed.

 

Depending on driving style a new rubber coupling will run for a couple of thousand miles with slight vibration and then they tear and rip as they are not designed to accommodate any angle changes during rotation of the prop.

 

Front section of Capri with UJ is fitted to mine now,all sorted.

 

One piece prop should fix it too,make very sure of measurements though as they may be critical (in and out travel of the gearbox) under axle movement,made worse if the axle bushes are weak or torn during 'wind up' when pulling away.

 

Also worth checking,early Mk3's have adjustable pinion inclination ,this is on the lower wishbones ,grooved plates are behind the bolts to lock the axle into place.It may be worth checking if it has moved out of position over the years,as it will cause a vibration too.
