MK2 dual brake master reservoir

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was dismantling my 1968 MK2 series 1 dual brake master cylinder (0,70" bore as fitted to export models) for reconditioning and after practicing with a rough condition spare one i realized that there is no way to remove the reservoir without damaging it in the process. Heating the master cylinder helped some but as the front snap ring is surely corroded in all units by now and all my reservoir are past it anyway a new one would be ideal.

But original reservoirs are unobtainable and me being a incurable skinflint miser  OEM stuff and sending for rebuild is out of the question.

After a fair bit of Googleing i found that Land Rover 88 series master cylinder reservoir looks identical in pictures and those are readily available in reasonable prices.

And cortina dual for reference: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GIRLING-MASTER-BRAKE-CYLINDER-FORD-CORTINA-Mk2-1600-1600E-GT-64676597-/251538442610?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a90dc0972

If no one has any better knowledge against this, i will give it a try and report back.

Order sent, fingers crossed this will fit

Yes, this a Lucas unit rather than Girling but all seem to be one big happy family. TRW part also seems to be the same but those are not available seperately.

Btw. maybe this should have been posted to PartsID section of the forum? :headscratch:

Well , that will save me trying to clean mine if it does fit . You probably already know , but there is different bore sizes for the repair kit for the cylinder itself depending on the model . If it still has the coloured plastic ring around , that should tell you which you have . Cheers- Steve.

Hoping so, will report back regardless of the outcome. Maybe by fortnights time?

Yes, mine is green banded, meaning 0.7" bore and the correct repair kit for it is SP2377, also rare as hens teeth

Here's some data that i came across, was really helpful;

Hi Myles - so which colour band do you have on yours ? Mine is a GT estate so according to the parts book , the same as GT and E export models , and the band is yellow .

Sorry, can't help you there :( Surely someone has?

Depending on that Ford broke their habit of putting on any part that they could source the cheapest at that week in the later models

Girling band colours:

Bore/ band colour:

0.7" /Green

3/4" /Yellow

13/16" /Red

7/8" /Black

Take these with a sack of salt, i am sure there are "special" cases. Verify by measuring etc.

Ok Myles - thanks for checking . Mine does work ok so probably will get away with a kit but if a new cylinder of the correct size was available , be daft not to buy it . Steve

Still waiting for the tank to arrive but in the meantime here is something that i did not remember that i had

adapter_zps5bf2c9fd.jpg

A adapter plate to fit horizontal flanged master cylinder in place of vertical flanged. It came from my series 2 spares car. This will come handy as my original master was in fairly rough condition. Brake pipes are in the opposite side though but they will be replaced anyway.
