Lounge Lizard 0 Posted February 8, 2015 I've never really understood this but I do know people who give their cars names. One person I know calls his The Black Slug (it's a Cavalier). I also knew one who called her car (a modern hatchback) Chicken Tikka. I have no idea why and I never wanted to uncover the reason in case I accidently stumbled upon something witchcraft related. Oh I knew one called Melvin as well. Can someone please explain this curious behaviour? P.S. I suppose the logical name for a Cortina is Tina.

bortaf 86 Posted February 8, 2015 Logic has bugger all to do with it, were talking about giving an inanimat object a name and personality :shocking: My Mk5 is the puce moose, named after a (possably) drunken posting season on here about a decade ago whist discussing the colour, my Mk3 was called BOP cos the reg plate was bop23k, My Mk5 2.3GhiaS estate was bev cos the reg was BEV823X (i allways shorten names to the smallest/nickname 1 sylable style, even mates i never call Andy, Andy allways "and" ect ect) my P100 is called trucky (a play on baloony , Heinz Doofenshmirtzs friend from phinnias and ferb), i even do the voice "truckyyyyyy" Usually thay are all called Ahole or Bstd or good girl depending on if they are broken or not :icecream:
Danish 294 Posted February 8, 2015 Can someone please explain this curious behaviour? Anthropomorphism? I had a Discovery called Dennis, though that was named by the previous owner's daughter, and our GSi3000 was called "the Battle Bus", also by the previous owner, and my current Jaguar was called "Minerva" by the previous owner. But I can't recall naming any cars myself. Motorcycles are a different matter, they have souls and need names :D

Their shapes have more seductive qualities whereas bikes just look the same. I know it's about driving too but I believe it all starts with the shape. Danish 294 Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) Why do bikes have souls but not cars? A good question... I think the relationship between bike and rider is far more intimate than car and driver - I've ridden my bikes far closer to the limit than I ever have my cars, and there have been times when the bike has kept me alive - I've never got that close with a car. I've many pleasant memories too of long road trips, just me and my bike, in foul weather, lost in France, all sorts of stuff. I think too, riding a bike is more than a form of transport, it's a lifestyle, you're a biker. I've never seen a pub with a sign outside saying "No Car Drivers" :) I don't ride now, I lost three friends in one year, and I had what at the time was the world's fastest production bike and killing myself, or worse, seemed a matter of when, not if. I still hanker after one though. My affection for my old Cortina came close mind, and I hope my current one will too. Edited February 8, 2015 by Danish

Kencrackfixer 31 Posted February 8, 2015 Personnally speaking, sometimes the names just happen ! For no apparent reason. I brought my project car (KT) in lots of pieces, partly stripped ,with bits missing. I can't even tell you where the name came from. It started as K T and now is known as Katie or Katy as it's got more involved with. I've always thought as cars as female rather than male. :playball:

wolfrace 116 Posted February 8, 2015 I don't think I've ever done it with something inanimate myself, I found it hard enough giving the cat a name and that has a personality. Not that I have a problem with others doing that, I'd love to relate to things in that way but just don't feel it. I totally get what Jayne is on about with motorbikes, you can take a bike anywhere in the world and you are never driving on the wrong side of the vehicle, with some bikes you really can go anywhere, it's like a motorised horse.
