chris mk3 325 Posted March 2, 2015 (edited) ......maybe in the future i may change to a better performance lump for my mk3 1600 OHV. .........2.0 pinto, V6, Zetec? What s the best way to go? V6 would be nice n lumpy, im drawn towards the Zetec. Do they drop in ok? what exhaust manifold to use? i would like to run on carbs. Danish 294 Posted March 2, 2015 Oh, it depends what you like. Is it important to look original? In which case a Pinto might be the way to go - can be left original-looking but tuned a bit. If you want laid back cruising and a nice torquey engine, then a 2.3/2.8/2.9 Cologne is an option, or a Rover V8. Or for a lot of power and don't mind the engine bay looking modern, then Zetec or Duratec are options. Another option is too stick with a cross-flow - some of the Escort boys get mental amounts of power out of them.

wolfrace 116 Posted March 3, 2015 You should get good money for a 1600 xflow, like Jayne said, people like them for kit cars but some guys tune them. You could make your 1600 go quite well but it's probably easier to fit a bigger engine and with twin 40's on a 1600 x flow you will not get great fuel economy. I have driven a standard pinto, a turbo'd pinto and a 3.5 V8 in a mk3. Any engine you chose you should notice the difference, even a standard pinto. Why not go for a zetec? Lots of them around and mostly cheap, cheap spares, loads of aftermarket bits, they're powerful and economical. The main issue is mounts and water rail which you can either make (I am sure you are capable) or buy from somewhere like retro ford. If money was no object, like lottery win territory, I would fit a turbocharged V8 of some sort.
do it sideways 41 Posted March 3, 2015 Personally I love the twin cam i4 from Sierra you can use rs2000 engine 150bhp straight away, easy fitting, 5 speed from Sierra, economic, pinto, crossflow, good engine's, but harsh and uneconomic compared to modern engine's,

buzzard 13 Posted March 3, 2015 I think it's all bin said . 1600 x flow is a good engine . And looks great with a set of 40s or 45s bored out to 1700 should pull a cortina along . Zetec is a good modern engine and yes you can have carbs with it . Bda rocker cover and it will look classic to .pinto I love them . And a 2.9 v6 I like to . wolfrace 116 Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) yhea Jayne I prefer the look of a supercharger sticking through the bonnet, but recently I saw a vid on YouTube with a turbo'd Chevy Chevelle v8 with a big turbocharger it sounded nuts and goes better plus apart from the mental bov and spooling sound you can't tell it's running forced induction from the outside.
