cable rating.

Hi,Gang,

Has anybody out there got a chart showing the amp rating of various cables?

In the good old days we used to have things like 14/.012 and 28/.012

I knew where I was up to with that,but now we have .5 and .6 and .7 and 1mm square

and thin wall cable.

 

All I need to know is amp rating for these new numbers.

I'm sure there is someone out there who knows??

It's not that simple as you would want to increase rating for a long length, or where cables are packed tightly together, or if they are running through a hot area. The number of strands also affects how much current a wire can carry.

 

I think that's why there aren't any easy to find charts.

Good table, but that is MAX carrying capacity, the capacity drops for long runs, etc. as in m y previous post. :thumbup:

The important thing is to go a good quality tri-rated wire with UL insulation and then buy a size according to what kind of current are you intending to draw. This can be easily calculated using OHM's law, You'll be surprised how low a current is required to power most applications. Unless you are intending a really long run the voltage drop and associated resistance build up is negligible (We've recently been testing 45M cable assemblies at work and only had to tweak the resistance setting on the Cirris tester up to 5 OHM). And remember with any wiring, if in doubt fit a correctly rated fuse in line, fit grommets where required and as mentioned earlier in the thread the current rating will decrease if the wire is in a bundle rather than in free air.
