why is Cortina Day not more popular?

Recommended Posts

Something must be working.....since 3.30 yesterday the website has had over 200 hits...I know that doesn't make 200 Cortinas but there are plenty of people who know about the day!....11000 hits this year, by the way.:)...

Hopefully the showday won't be too quiet!

In my eyes Cortina Day has never failed, it always gets a  from me.

I am involved in the local "small-time" flower show and the costs to put on this show are unbelievable.

When the blue-rinse brigade moan about the £5 entry, i point out some of the costs £8000 marquee hire, £1600 arris fencing ect ect.

Yes, it was a bit quiet last year and i think more free advertising could be done.

Personally i have advertised it on PISTONHEADS in the s/w events section and i have dropped their yellow flyers all around the country at shows and as part of my job as a driver. Maybe a few of us could be sent flyers to distribute at shows ect.

Final thought is, more cars used to attend before all this facebook, twitter, hashtag social media stuff was even invented. :headscratch:

Even before BSC, MTOC ect had forums. :)

This is the thing with shows...in the past to find out how to fit a 5 speed, wire up a rev counter, carry out repairs etc, was to catch up with fellow owners. In this age, everything you need is at the press of a few buttons. Within an hour you can get pretty much any info you need with pics showing how its done...look at Petes vids on youtube...strip down and analysis of pretty much an entire Mk3.

Add onto that the parts you would pick up, instead of clicking on Ebay!

I like the yat/mon show, only been the last couple of years. Good atmosphere, I dont know what it was like years ago.

I think some people just aren't into shows or big social gatherings but I guess there are loads of reasons.

I've turned up to a couple of shows before without the cortina so it's not all about showing the car imo but mainly an opportunity to meet up with some people from the club & maybe have a bit of luck and find some cheap parts. Maybe some guys just like the social aspect and showing a car is secondary.

I guess for some parking up all day isn't as entertaining as a drag strip or trail/hillclimb so although they turn up to car shows/events they prefer ones where there is a track-day or a strip. With that said most of those cars that go up the strip are not 100% standard so maybe the owners tend to stray from traditional park up and display type shows.

You can get some using social media or forums as a soap box to start moaning about insignificant mods, saying folk who've done this or that have wrecked a good car... You dont get that attitude with anyone I know or have met personally but you see it on forums so maybe since forums and twitter and all that started becoming popular it put folk off turning up to non performance related events if they feel their non standard cars are not going to be appreciated.

Some guys have poor social hours due to their job, like if you're self employed for example or have to work weekends, way more people these-days have to put up with that which makes going to shows awkward.

This is me, I find "part up and sit around" shows boring.

I've not had many negative comments at shows about my modded cars, and nothing I couldn't deal with  , but what does put me off it shows where you have a half dozen categories of silverware, with a catch-all "best modified" which gives an impression that a modded car isn't quite as good.

Some people think their car has to be concours to take to a show and as Wolfrace says above there will be lots of Cortinas at Santa Pod tomorrow whos owners wouldnt dream of going to a park up and sit about type of show - their cars are built for , strip, track and race - so horses for courses .

BUT if we help publicise and educate we can make the less popular shows better.

Mk1 nationals also needs advertising to the general public - there were thousands of none classic car owning people at Tatton Park today and they paid £7.50 each for the priveldge to go in and look at our cars - if they knew about Cortina day and the Mk1 Nats - they could be paying for those shows too.

Well, mine's barely roadworthy half the time and it won't be much better than that on Saturday but I'll still be there. My entire car is showing some sort of rust atm but I know that anyone who drives a Cortina knows why and realises that restoring them is a long term plan. Some of us would've got less for murder.

And I would encourage anybody reading this to do the same, even if your car won't quite be fully restored until next year, if you can, bring it along anyway. You can't lose anything by it and you're likely to gain experience from the guys who've already done that. And you're safe in the knowledge that your car won't be as bad as mine :P

I took my car to yat in 2013, with the outside done but seats from a scrap yard .

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT,, JUST BRING IT :showoff:
