Dilemma - which car to sell?

Recommended Posts

Sorry I've been a bit quiet recently - week's holiday in France and a whole lot of work related crap to deal with since then.

Anyway, I'm basically being made redundant and then re-engaged as a "consultant" - ie doing the same job for less money and no employment security etc. etc.

Guess I mustn't grumble but this has implications for the current motor fleet. The Sierra is going up for sale today but one, possibly even two, of the Cortinas may have to go too.

The Mk4 is definitely staying, so that leaves the two Mk5s.

The Crusader is absolutely spot on, a great daily driver and I'm unlikely to find/afford another low mileage rust-free one if I sell.

On the other hand, I've put a lot of time and effort into the two door, there's still plenty I can do to improve it, it's probably worth less than the Crusader and it's pretty rare, especially given its original spec - but it's less practical and although the shell is pretty solid it isn't a minter.

Any thoughts, suggestions, abuse, offers etc. gratefully received!

Hi. No idea on the which car to sell question.

However as the rules of redundancy are that the job is redundant not the employee, how do they get away with making you redundant but still retaining your services as a "consultant"?

That's the first question. Second question is if you are then a "consultant" I presume that this means that you self employed? Is that true? So therefore you could choose your hours and work free lance for other companies possibly, therefore increasing income and meaning you don't have to sell in the first place. No contract of employment you see.

By paying him redundancy pay but then offering him another similar job I presume.

depends on the terms of the new contract - possibly not, they can write a clause in saying he must only work for them

Yup I'm self employed so there are a ton of clauses with my contracts which restrict for who I can work for and what work I can use/disclose for self promotion. Also all the fun of chasing payment on invoices. Not all bad though there are some bonuses. Good luck with it.

I've had (just) less than two years' continuous employment. My role is one of several being outsourced, so technically the jobs have become redundant. Anyway, we'll see how it goes, so long as the Sierra goes I'm not going to rush to sell a Cortina, especially as I can't pick between them!

I agree in keeping the mk4  then i think the crusader as its more use-able than the 2 door. So im with you really. Sell the 2 door Mike. sorry about the job,and good luck with the sales.

Great country Britain, really looks after its own.

Two of my mate's have been sold out by the company's they have slaved for for years.

Loyalty should be removed from the dictionary.

Good luck mate tough unfair decisions.

Thanks for the support guys - I'm a bit calmer now so no panic Cortina selling just yet!

The Sierra has gone though - put it as a classified ad on eBay last night (see here, but be warned I was on full Dr Waffle mode:- http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574629005&toolid=10001&campid=5335900709&customid=&mpre=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-Ford-Sierra-2-0i-DOHC-Ghia-auto-showroom-condition-/201423540502?hash=item2ee5c75116 ) and I've just taken a deposit! Should have had the balls to put it on as an auction...

I'm not sure any of us can tell you which to sell and which to keep, as that's a decision for your head and your heart.

I do offer a little advice though - only sell if you really have to or want to.

I lost a good chunk of my car storage a while back, moving cars onto mates driveways and the like. About 4 weeks ago I made the call to sell a very good mk4 2.0GL in Jupiter Red as it was living outside and every time I saw it my mate's cat seemed to be on top of it.

Fast forward to this week and I've finally got new premises.

If I'd know it was just a few more weeks I'd have kept the mk4 as it will be difficult to replace. Maybe you might feel the same?

Glad it's turned into a rhetorical question Mike, but IF I were in the position of letting one of the three go, for me it would be no contest - it would be the Crusader, based purely on the rarity of the other two

Glad to hear you don't need to sell anymore. Like Stevewes, I'd have sold the Crusader as well as it would be the easiest to replace when circumstances change. Enjoyed reading your resto thread on the 1.3L. Seems like you've got a soft spot for that one and your MK4 is probably unique!

It may still come to selling one but I'll see how things pan out - I've overstretched myself a bit over the last few months (hope Clare's not reading this!) and the cut in income isn't going to help but I'll do all I can to keep hold of the three Cortinas.

You're absolutely right about the Crusader being the easiest to replace and not having it would probably encourage me to use the other two but it's nice having a car that I can completely rely on!

I agree the mk4 is fantastic, it has been interesting following your progress in making the 2 door good but it is never going to be as useable as a 4door 2.0, the Crusader is in great condition and ready to use. Cortinas are great to drive and that is what ownership is really all about so of the three the 2 door is the obvious choice as I see it, although I hope your fortunes improve soon and you can keep all three.
