Ruby Interior Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all

just a question.

been investigating ruby trim as Im building a car with this interior colour.

I notice that it seems the interior is 2 tone, that is the seats are a brighter red than rest of interior scheme.

This appears to be the case on the Olive interior too, looking on the web at green/olive interiors, the seats are in the same pallette but a different shade from the dash and plastics.

wondering if this is to make the interior more balanced so that its not all the same colour. to give it contrast etc.

the same idea, intersingly, is not applied to the marquis blue trim though.

and on tan trim, is it that tan seats and door cards contrast to a brown finish on the console dash etc?

i need to resolve as im in process of colouring all my interior

i have accurate paint matches in vinylcote (sent a swatch) and the ruby paint for the dash is exact match to other items such as steering wheel and consoles etc, even door cards are same as dash colour.

but the seats, im convinced are a brighter shade , much more red in the seats as opposed to the brown red of the dash.

i peeled back some of the vinyl (on my 2 door gxl ruby) and the clean unfaded vinyl of the seat is deffo brighter shade than that of the dash.

its not that the dash is faded either as i have a NOS Ruby steering wheel and its a redish brown.

im happy to go ahead with 2 tone as offering the colours up to eachother they look nice

just wondered what others have seen on colour trim in thier cars?

black of course is all black.

what trim have you guys girls?

and what do you find?

any 2 tone colours

e.g olive, tan etc?

any replies appreciated

You will often find that the soft upholstery of the seats and door cards are a lighter shade than that of the harder plastic trim of the dash, steering cowl, A post kick panels etc.

I had a capri mk1 years ago that had light aqua vinyl interior, but dash, steering wheel, parcel shelf etc were more of a dark green.

I think its down to the different composition of plastic, vynil, paint (on metal parts) & the technology at the time.

they where cheap mass produced vehicles made from cheap mass produced parts.

cars of this type are restored to much higher stds than they were when new.

I'm pretty sure it is two tone, I'd go off what you've seen from the 2dr.

I just found this pic but it's not very useful being dark and grainy

I've got a few more pics somewhere that I've collected over the years, I'll see if I can dig them out.

Ask Phorbius. His car has the best preserved ruby interior of any car I know. From what I can remember, the seats are a brighter shade of red than t the rest of the interior.

I don't think they were 2tone by design, but weather it's the ruby, olive, tan or the marquise blue there were coulor differences between the seats, dash, door cards, carpet, as Craig has said manufacturing processes 50 years ago may account for it,funnily enough, mk5s were less prone to coulor variations,,

Black Centres with Ruby squabs, ruby & black door cards (black tops similar to the Mk4 GL) with all ruby dash with black crash pad.

there's no real divide on GXL door cards to make a neat two tone scheme.

plus i'd have thought you'd want to restore to standard. esp on a rarer colour/trim combo.

Man I love red interiors. Almost makes me want to break out the vinylkote. I've also seen a few later cortinas and the vinyl matches the carpets and seats.

If you see old prints hung on walls of scenes or photos of people which are an odd green & blue, this is because the first colour to fade is anything from the red side of the colour spectrum which performs poorly under UV light.

It is possible Ford made the colour contrast, in some ways this might look better, but I don't hold much hope for their colour processes back then, even if the multitude of materials held the colour uniformly 50 years of sunlight will put a change to that.
