How to remove screw

Recommended Posts

I need a bit of help to remove a window winder screw on a mk1 rear door, i have tried wd40 and about 10 different screwdrivers, I even got the heat gun to it briefly, but so far I'm stumped. All the other door handles and winders undone without too much trouble. Any advice would be appreciated.

Get a suitable sized screwdriver, put it on screw and give it a good tap with a hammer. :smashcomp:

Tony.

If that doesn't work the older type impact driver may shift it.

First you want a perfectly snug fitting driver bit. You havent rounded it so i am sure you know not all cross head bits are the same. You also want a driver with a decent sized grippy handle for leverage. Tapping the end while alternating between trying to tighten and loosen sometimes works, I've done this with stuck studs before that were a pain to remove.

Other than that its dremmel time and cut a deep enough slot to get a good flat head in there for additional leverage. Again, nice fat handle screw driver needed. That's really a last resort though.

Cheers Wolf race, I had to get my grinder into another screw yesterday but that was for the rear number plate light . I use ultra thin diamond blades for cutting porcelain tiles at work and it made a nice neat slot so I was able to get a flat head in there. Unfortunately thats not an option with this due to the winder, I'll go to halfords with one of the screws I've already removed and see what they have.

solution I'd say is get a dremel on the head to grind it off. As you know you'll end up with just the shank and the winder can be removed. Then with the dremel and cutting disc, make a slot so a slotted screwdiver can be used

Make sure you are using a philips and not a posidrive screw driver as it will seat better, put the driver in the screw then give the handle a sharp tap (getting harder as you continue to do it), i use drivers with a head on the shaft so i can turn then with a 10mm spanner, if not mole grips on the shaft may help :tears:

Success! at last, I found a PH3 drill bit in a drill set that I had and that done the job, I'm glad it wasn't the first screw I tried to undo on the car.

Thanks to everyone

Drill into the head so it comes off then remove the complete window winder, then soak wats left of the screw in penetrating oil and leave it until you need to refit the window winder how ever long that may be.
