nosher 1 Posted August 15, 2016 I have acquired an rx8 6speed gearbox to go into the Cortina has anyone on here done this ?? The car is a 1966 mk2 early series1 currently running a connaught built 1690 crossflow. I have all the components for the conversion but just need to know about the gearbox mounts and any other problems we are likely to encounter. Thank you Steve. I think you will probably need to make a gearbox tunnel to go over it
John Mack 329 Posted August 17, 2016 I get the novelty factor of having a 6-speeder in a Cortina, but I'm not sure the effort will be worth it, 1st and 6th are much the same as 1st and 5th in the type 9? I don't mean this as a criticism, maybe it'll make it better as the "middle" ratios will suit your engine? But you might find that you just change gear more often. I do like the idea, what engine and axle ratio do you have?
tizwass 23 Posted August 17, 2016 another gearbox that fits the tunnel and is the same size and cheap is the lexus is200 6 speed

the-ford-cortina.com 226 Posted August 17, 2016 another gearbox that fits the tunnel and is the same size and cheap is the lexus is200 6 speed IN A SERIES 1 MANUAL TUNNEL? Alan has a fast 1660 Kent engine in his mk2 he only needs 3 gears now to get to 100mph , 5 or 6 would just be more changing gear Of course you can always do like truck drivers with lots of gears and miss some out, go from say 1st to 3rd and then to 6th. Danish 294 Posted August 17, 2016 I get the novelty factor of having a 6-speeder in a Cortina, but I'm not sure the effort will be worth it From what I understand the 'box is very similar in size to a type-9 and has the same input and output shafts - this makes it an attractive option to me, and I'm actually thinking to try an RX8 one - if it's any good I can sell my stockpile of type-9s
the-ford-cortina.com 226 Posted August 17, 2016 From what I understand the 'box is very similar in size to a type-9 it wont fit in a series 1 Mk2 Cortina then without surgery to the gearbox tunnel
