Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone.

How much do you all think a good 2 .3 V6 engine is worth complete plus the manual 4 speed gearbox, are they not wanted as people want the pinto engine or are they sort after like the 2.8 and 2.9 engines.

Your advice and knowledge is very appreciated.

Cheers guys

Hi mate.

I recently got hold of a 2.3 engine, It was complete minus the carb. (when I collected the engine the mounts had been removed which P****d me off a bit but that's another story) The seller knocked a bit off the price and I ended up paying 80 quid for it. No idea if it's good to go but I bought it with a view to re build, the seller said it was a good runner with 78K.

I think anything up to 150 for a 2.3. You're probably right that most people want 2.8/2.9 and Pinto 2 litres. The 2.3 is less desirable.

I'm not sure on the gearbox but again if it's a 4 speed probably won't be worth as much as a type 9.

Are you looking to buy one or selling ?

The 2.3 is a good engine economical when maintained has plenty of torque smooth running £150 is a good price for an engine that is un rebuilt and unproven £300 for a good running documented looked after engine.

If you just want a V6 for normal running get a 2.3 (much better with a 4 or 5 speed manual than an Auto less to go wrong and less wasted fuel) if you want power and hooning around and you don't mind a high fuel bill get a 2.8 or 2.9 IMO

Pete, you're quite right about the auto's being heavier on fuel. A 4 speed probably would be better over a C3 auto but I quite like the auto regardless of fuel consumption. That's just my opinion of course.

One thing worth mentioning is the type9 doesn't fit the earlier 2.3's easy, the input shaft on the type 9 must be slightly larger than the 2.3 4 speed so makes it difficult to fit as the spigot bearing is too large to fit the crank. I know Ian, Skodaboy has fitted a T9 to a 2.3 but he had to have a bush made specially for the job rather than using a spigot bearing.

I'm not sure about later 2.3's as my original 2.3 and the one I have now were/are from 78 cars. Later engines or Granada versions could be different. Ian's is a 79 MK5 I think.

The 2.8 has the correct size bore for a larger spigot bearing and also goes rather well in a Cortina with a manual box lol.

These are just my experiences and may well be incorrect.

Yeah I did indeed fit a 2.8 capri T9 to my 2.3, the spigot bearing was a problem, it seems that when Ford were engineering the crank, they did not bore the appature for the input shaft to on the Auto destined 2.3's. So I was left with the problem of how to find a spigot bearing to fit a 19mm hole to a 15mm shaft. But they dont make a needle roller bearing that is 19mm x 15mm. So the answer was a bronze phosper bearing. The same style of bearing is used on the Morris 1000, so thats a proven design. When fitting I loaded it with grease and then cleaned it up before pushing it into place. Good luck with your conversion.

Sorry for the late reply..

I have a 2.3 Ghia manual (lhd) but was wondering if to sell as a complete vehicle or maybe break hence asking what the engine is worth as the car is complete and fully working but needs a respray.

You'll probably be best to put some pictures up on the forum. 2.3 ghias are a bit thin on the ground so there will be people willing to do the work on it, for the right price. Saves you the bother of stripping it and multiple people letting you down over parts collections etc.

Other than that if you do want to break the engine mounts will get you £70 on their own. You can use the same mounts on all cologne v6's inc the cossy 24v on all cortinas mk3-5.

The atlas diff is worth at least £250 if its good, they're in demand.
