petermac 5 Posted October 2, 2016 By changing the pulley for a smaller one will indeed increase the speed of the alternator, but it may be too fast at full revs, so it may, worst case senario explode at high rpm. Just a thought :headscratch: Peter.

sheffieldcortinacentre 635 Posted October 2, 2016 That could be your problem, try it with a normal bulb back in.
bortaf 85 Posted October 3, 2016 I have already changed the bulb for an Led. There's your problem, you cant use leds in there without causing issues, i allways change the entire dash to led except the charge light :) i'm not going to try and waffle it but LEDs dont give enough resistance or sumink to excite the field coils (or sumink) all i know is you need a resistor in there with the LED in parralell for a single wire non self exciting alternator to work, just put the 3W fillament back in, it's easyer in the long run IMHO
Pete-H 66 Posted October 3, 2016 Well I have spoken with the Auto Electrician I had the alternator from this afternoon and he said the bulb has to be a max wattage of 2.2w and if it still doesn't change the cut in speed then fit a smaller pulley, he also said there is no possible way to blow an alternator up boy over reving it by fitting a smaller pulley. So I'm going to see which bulb I have that is the closest wattage and try that first. Thank you all for your help.
bortaf 85 Posted October 3, 2016 You may not blow it up electricly but over rev it and it can let go, seen it happen, had to underdrive 1 for a high revving race engine (grasstrack 2.0 pinto) cos he'd had 3 go on him, twice the front bearing, last time the rear. As a foot note the bearing i removed had the same part number as a hotpoint washing machine and a vacume cleaner, both were cheaper than ordering one through an auto electrician
sheffieldcortinacentre 635 Posted October 3, 2016 Perhaps you could fit the Hoover motor in place of an alternator & clean up in the race. Clean up geďdit 😂😂

Pete-H 66 Posted October 3, 2016 Well I will try the bulb first then look at a smaller pulley if I have to, the smallest I can find for the alternator I have is only 7mm smaller than the one I have we will see.

Pete-H 66 Posted October 6, 2016 Ok I have re fitted a Bulb after fining a 2w bulb and the charge light goes out almost immediately as the engine fires into life so thank you all for you help and advice. :winner:
Mark.C 0 Posted May 2, 2017 (edited) That is how my charge light is on my MK5. Rev it up to 1700rpm before it goes out, every time I start it. It's putting out 14.13 volts. The bearings are a bit noisy though. It will be a good alternator when I fit the new bearings. I got them today. 😎 Edited May 2, 2017 by Mark.C
