Lazarus 6 Posted November 7, 2016 I think what happens is that a car goes through a few stages. It starts out as a current model, then a late model second hand, which is still considered quite up to date, then becomes a cheap-ish second hand buy, then a very cheap banger. After that, a sort of borderline classic, and finally an established one. Most tend to disappear when they are at the cheap second hand buy/banger stage. I call it the nostalgia curve. We hate them in our twenties, we crush them in our thirties, we forget about them in our forties and we truly miss them in our fifties... I think we mostly miss our twenties... We tend to refuse the idea tha models we saw beeing launched will be classics. But they will. And so will we... The 35 year rule is ok. Since the recycling policies where introduced, crushing cars over 15 or 12 years old for money incentives, the rate of disappearance of "modern" 90's cars was appaling! Nobody cares, very few will remain.

teletubby 7 Posted November 8, 2016 (edited) The Sierra is way ahead of the Cortina in how it drives, rides and stops. It may be, but I would actually rather have a Marina than a Sierra. I can see the interest in a Cosworth version, although they are not to my taste, but the basic versions I have always thought are very ugly, unattractive cars. I have only driven one once, a B regd one and I didn't think it was anything special at all. The interior was very poor, all cheap looking plastic, to me a late model Mark 5 Cortina was vastly superior Edited November 8, 2016 by teletubby
bortaf 96 Posted November 8, 2016 Another reason for the demise of the Mondeo is it became popular with banger racers The same as granadas, mind you the mondeo production ran/runs for longer so as HML doesn't differentiate between marks they wont be on there for years, the complication bit is a very good point, i see many solid modernish motors get scrapped for electrical reasons where as it was only rust killed off 99% of cortinas, modern cars have rust and leccy to survive ? The newest car i ever scrapped was a 5 year old clio, it had sat in an auction house for a year waiting to sell but it wouldn't start as the ECU was fried, no-one would touch it due to possable costs and in the end the owner just left it there and the auction house got me to clear it and scrap it. The local garage company i worked for had a fleet of 15 odd Vaux combo vans, 5 of them were unusable by 6 months old and spent the rest of thier life in a compound cos the dealer couldn't fix them, ended up in court with the dealer colsing down and 8 or the vans scrapped with under 10K on the clocks, some never even made it to 5K ! (twas the start of the infamous diesel pump issues on the 1.3 diesels) .

Having said that obv i'd love to be back in a Mk5 cos the mondeo just doesn't make me feel 18 again (in fact it makes me feel old) and lets face it that's why we love EM not for driving dynamics, opulance or comfort

I do love driving my Mk2s for how they drive , it mudst of course be partly because they are nearly 50 year old but the feel of going round a roundabout in a 1600E is superb
Danish 294 Posted November 8, 2016 now if the mondeo was RWD it would be 99.9% perfect IMHO Mine too. The same for our Volvo V70 - if it was RWD it would be perfect. I hanker after a 960 just to mess around in.

I hanker after a 960 just to mess around in. TBH i'm still a bit image conscious, in so much as my rides have to look out of date (bit like me ) hense a Mk1 mondy, moderns ish looking but dated with those small slitty headlamps(Mk2 is too modern with those bug eyes) , again like me, modernish glasses and a hair style from the 70's It does make me laugh i still get the old "dont see many of them about nowdays mate" when i go to the fuel station, same as i have for the last 25 years ! going from cortinas to sierras (and back and forth) and onto mondeos, maybe i'm only attracted to dated cars, i couldn't stand the mondeo or sierra till they were dated and then they become expensive and i move on to the "next new, err old thing". AT least i'm keeping up to date, just 20 years behind the times
teletubby 7 Posted November 8, 2016 Im up to 50 years behind now with a mark 2! TBH, I wouldn't know what a Mark 1 or 2 Mondeo looked like without looking it up on Google images. I sort of stopped noticing cars after the early/mid 80s

I sort of stopped noticing cars after the early/mid 80s I did exactly the same, it's just i had to move on and somone offerd a mondeo as a swap for my Mk5 shell and that was it, can't afford to go back at the moment, i work on all sorts of modern stuff day in day out and that puts me off 99.9% of them and to be perfectly honest the mondeo is a dam good car, one of fords best IMHO from a driving dynamics point of view, oh it needs modifying but dont they all
