MK3 1300 Economy Engine

Recommended Posts

Head gasket makes no difference, in 70s crossflows it was the piston type ( size/shape of bowl in the top) that determined compression ratio from the factory.

It's because it was a based on the high comp eng, again from memory I think the 1300 low comp version was only avl in the escort not capri/cortina.

In practice they where slightly less economical than a normal version as they need more throttle to compensate for the poor performance response. Low mileage survivors exempted most will have had the carb & dizzy replaced due to wear & tear long ago with std parts.

Sounds similar to the low comp pintos where they changed the pistons in the transit engines. Both my 1300 cortinas were HC the FL one went a bit better than my PFL for some reason, at the time there wasn't much in it between that and my mates tawny xl 1600 xflow.

Yup. I assembled a LC pinto and it was just the pistons. Con rods and crank were the same as the standard Sierra engine.

That's the single choke one if memory serves. Then yes.

I've found a Weber with the same venturi diameter as the standard 1300 carb (25mm). Once fitted, will I need to make any changes to the dizzy?

Doubt you'll need to it won't hurt to check timing, gap etc as doubt you'll notice any change in poker.

Can you successfully tune the Weber 34 ICH without a rolling road?

One last question. The Weber carb has come with a 125 main jet, the standard carb from a 1300 is a 122 main jet. Should I stick with the Weber 125 or fit a 122 main jet?

Try it as is, it's not a big job to swap over later.

Let me know if you want to sell the original carb after fitting the Weber

I'll probably end up keeping it just in case I have an issue with the Weber or decide to take it back to factory spec at some point. But if I do, I'll let you know.
