MK5 V8 1 Posted March 28, 2017 Hey guys, i'm sure i have read on here somewhere someone having the same issue with steering racks. i bought a brand new one from kelly bray steering last year. well i fitted it and took it to get the tracking checked only to be told the rack is wrong, as in the arms are to short to be able to track it, they fall out the track rod ends. now are there 2 different racks or are there different length track rod ends.. the mind boggles. :headscratch: cheers
buzzard 13 Posted March 28, 2017 I've never had that problem but I do know that track rod ends come in different lengths . But not that you would notice that much .
sheffieldcortinacentre 753 Posted March 28, 2017 Only one rack fitted to mk3/4/5,all same mounting point etc, so it's either been rebuilt with wrong ends or the track rod ends are wrong ones. Mk3/4/5/p100,mk1/2 Granada,mk2 escort all use same ones, without checking there's prob something with same thread that could be shorter. Mk1 escort has imperial thread / taper The mk1/2 escort uses the same length track rod as the cortina (the rack & body is shorter though), again without checking the Capri & Granada may use the same ones too. MK5 V8 1 Posted March 28, 2017 the track rod ends are the right ones as i didn't replace them when fitting the new rack, so i think craig is probably right with the wrong arms being used. i shall ring them me thinks
MK5 V8 1 Posted April 2, 2017 Ok, i rang the suppliers of the rack and he asked me to measure the length of the rack which i have and it's 1175mm from end to end, does this sound right? apon further inspection the wheels don't look as far out as the garage said they were which was 16 degree toe in which i assume would make it very weird to drive, there is also a good inch of thread in the track rod end, your thoughts please
MK5 V8 1 Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) Well i just screwed the trackrod ends on a couple of turns and fitted them back in the uprights and they're toeing out massively so the guy at tha garage was either winding me up or his fitter is a useless get. i'll find out tommorow Edited April 2, 2017 by MK5 V8

dgo 80 Posted May 29, 2017 :) I read on hear that someone bought a MK3 steering rack for 90 quid and sold it to someone in Ireland for 320 quid. I don't know why you'd do that when even Burtons will ship you one non-exchange to Dublin for £
