Cortina battery not charging

Recommended Posts

Now my cortina is home he isn't playing ball, I think the alternator has died as there is no output at the battery, would a dead alternator on a mk3 Cortina with crossflow engine stop the indicators, dash instruments working, there isn't a charge light or oil light on the dash, Battery is now quite flat ! When I got the car back the charge light came on intermittently but today nothing.

As the battery is flat then i would say yes. 12volt bulbs need 12 volts to work and if your battery is less than 12 then they won't work. Charge the battery for at least 24 hours and try again. the alternator not charging is probably down to the regulator or brushes worn out

Intermittent charge light is an indication of dying alternator or loose wiring. Have you checked that the wiring in the end of the alternator is pushed in tight?

there isn't a charge light or oil light on the dash,

Both bulbs earth via the engine so worth checking condition of engine earth strap........that'd be an easier fix.....here's hoping!

Charging and starting systems both rely on good earth circuit.

With no ing lit the battery won't charge, make sure the thin blue wire on alt is not broken & terminal is clean & tight fit.

Is the small thin wire connected to the positive terminal on battery if not you'll not have some of the electrics working.

As a Quick check with ign on earth the blue wire ign light should come on.

Next with wires connected start eng & disconnect earth terminal if engine stalls alt isn't charging.

My multi meter is showing just over battery voltage, the car has just come back from welding, which mat have killed the alternator off, though I did see the thing in the battery to stop damage.

So it was ok before the welding? I've welded with the alternator still connected. But having said that,I use the battery earth terminal for the welder clamp. It might be the volt reg that's duff. Is it an A127 alty?

Update I have been to the car , I checked the fuses, I found the fuse furthest from the driver has blown ! I swapped it and the alternator is charging, fuel & temp gauge works, Just the front indicators to sort now as they don't work but I guess that's the earths

indicators on front are known for bad earths on the 8mm indicator mounting bolt
